Training and possible racing

Hi all,

I Initially posted this in the Track section, but have been told that this might be a better area. Apologies if you have now seen it twice.

Background:

Over the last year I have been to some sessions on the track, and have decided that I would really like to concentrate on improving on the track and possibly even racing if I can get to decent standard.

My nearest velodrome Herne HIll, opens in a couple of weeks so will be going to the intermediate session before, but I am concious that if I wanted to race this season (being an average club cyclist on the road) I probably need to start a specific workout to improve on the track.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Beyond the weekly session at Velodrome how can I improve? (I am looking to improve physically rather than upgrading my newly purchased track bike Smile )

I understand its riding more regularly, and I am basically doing the following:

2 sessions of 15 sets of 1 minute riding at 4/10 effort (using gear: 50 front 23 rear , 1 minute 9/10 effort (using gear 50 front 15 rear (this is the ratio of my track bike)).

1 session of 40 miles in the hills

and will soon be doing one track session at the velodrome.

Is there someway I can improve that?

2) Is there any sort of diet / training that I can do that would help? and are there any decent books, or even a someone who could help me?

A coach has been suggested but I know little about finding one.

3) Is there anything I could do on my turbo trainer on my road bike that will help further?

thanks

Try this website, down the right are some links to coaches.

    http://www.abcc.co.uk/

There is a whole of training you could do, but coaches normally take a personal profile of you and your aims, and build training plans around that. I would think any training that improves your power is going to help.

Try a search on FTP, and see what this site brings up.

What sort of track racing are you aiming at?

If its general track racing - ie sprints, pursuits, distance racing etc then your interval training is a good start. Whilst your 40 mile hilly session is good for general stamina, also incorporate a longer speed session - say 2 x 10 mins (perhaps starting at 2 x 5 mins and working up over a few weeks) as fast as possible with a 5 min easy in between.
