That's more than a bit unfair.

There's not a great deal of room for the Stranglers to do much other than be the Stranglers. I formerly socialised with a band that toured as support for them a few years ago, I had and access all areas pass and watched the Stranglers play, much better than a lot of new music and they did deliver the goods.

They keep doing their own thing and fill massive venues every night of the tour. Fair play to them!
  • Met Jean Jacques Burnel back in '88 after The Stranglers played the Olympia in Dublin-smoked a fag and had a chat.
    Nice lad.

Saw the Boys, Men in Black in Bristol, 1980.
Never liked Punk til then. I was converted... like Paul on the road to Damascus, it was!

They are THE Best punkish band on the 80's, BUT...Their music was that, MUSICAL.

None of this "one note/one chord" rubbish of their contempories.

I've got some of their stuff on vinyl, LP's and singles. Wadda they worth?
Who cares, coz they're mine, Mine, MINE I tell ya !!!

Man united sell out too. Doesn't mean that they are any good.

Selling out venues is no indication of quality

    WTF?

    That is a ridiculous statement.

I'm not interested in football but how can you say Man Utd aren't any good?

    http://www.thefootballnetwork.net/main/s237/st24469.htm

It completely undermines your other argument...

A lot of people must think they are good for them to be selling out large venues over 30 years on.

That said, I'm not a fan...

Maybe not in the short term, when marketing and hype does all the work, but if a band's selling out venues after 3 decades, that's a different matter altogether. Especially in cases like the Stranglers, where they reach out to new fans with minimal marketing, rather than relying solely on nostalgic 50-somethings.

Give credit too the guys they're still playing well and sound superb. Saw them at the Roundhouse couple of years ago or so and they were on top form. Not many bands from that era are still around let alone selling out gigs. They're playing Glastonbury and T in the Park this year so they must be still doing something right.

I'm off to the O2 tonight too see Hugh Cornwell doing a song writing master class tonight, should be interesting.
  • just checked the date of the toon gig and it clashes with a showing of kenneth angers flims and a talk from the great man himself, sorry stranglers maybe next time.

Excellent night. Small crowd of around 50 in a small room, Hugh taking centre stage answering questions being put too him by an interviewer. Towards the end it was the audiences turn too ask a few questions, managed to ask 2 myself, one about who he would like to work with from the past or present and then has he plans to follow on from this tour, where he's been playing the full rattus album, to do the same again but with another Stranglers album...judging by his reply he will be.

Came over as a really nice chap, happy to talk about his days with the Stranglers, found the evening really interesting, glad I went.

    Cheers.

  • Had the pleasure of going to see the Stranglers in Aberdeen last so here's a brief review & as much of the set list as my memory serves me!
The Forum's not the biggest place in world so a sell out crowd was fairly crammed in but the stage is an ok height (compared to the lemon tree venue) so it wasn't too bad. Opening up was a man with an accordian later introduced as "Jock the box" with a rendition of Waltzin Black. We were then treated to & not in this order I may add (deep breath here) Grip,Skin Deep, Strange Little Girl, Retro Rockers, Nuclear Device, Duchess, Walk on by, Peaches, Golden Brown, Go buddy go, Always the sun, Nice & Sleazy, Down in the Sewer. I'm sure I may have missed a couple out so please feel free to fill in the spaces. First encore was the excellent 5 minutes followed by Something better change. Off they went & back they came for another encore finishing off with Hanging around & of course No more heroes. The boys (!) were in very fine form & the gig just gathered momentuem as the night went on.
A really excellent gig & far better than watching Man Utd anyday!!!!! (or a certain other Scottish football match that took place that day  )
Enjoy the rest of the tour!

    What, NO European Female???

One of their best. Got it as a single in the other room somewhere.
And NO, it's NOT for sale.

Saw the full band in 80/81 Bristol, and I wasn't a fan when I walked in.
Was a lifelong fan when I left though !

They epitomise the "Electro Synth" stuff back then, but with a sharp, biting, cutting edge.
And those BASS line..to die for !!!

    Anarchy, dressed in...BLACK.

you can get the sessions here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?d5jowmdmaca

    Tracklist is this

    Hanging Around
    I feel like a wog
    Goodbye toulouse
    Something better change

I'm pretty sure I've got this on tape somewhere with Peasant in the big shitty.

EMI were meant to be releasing a shed load of old 1st peel sessions including the skids and 999, same thing as strangefruit did years ago but obviously digital.

You might be interested in this too (just follow the links to rapidshare),

I was a bit disappointed with it but then I was a huge stranglers fan up until La Folie, after that they lost their way big time.

Incidentally I dont know whether you heard a documentary about girl bands on the radio about a month ago. The ever lovely Pauline Black interviewed JJB and he said that the infamous strippers that used to appear on stage with them (there are pics of the inner sleave of Live X certs LP), appeared of their own accord.

They were fans of the stranglers and didnt like them being accused of sexism so they turned up on stage, got their kits off.....only for the stranglers to be accused of sexism...ha ha I bet you Jet Black laughed so much his bus pass fell out. Take care and enjoy
