A little, but it also gives my LBS some cash rather than straight to Rapha...

these look great and Iooking for a really good quality jersey for this year... I dont own any Rapha stuff but these look a little stylish than the Assos jerseys to me.

Judging from the description these are summer wear only I guess unless you have the arm warmers. So which arm warmers would be needed to go with the red English jersey then?

Did you get the Belgian one?

Unfortunately they are not doing the Belgium one this year. A great shame.

    No?

Not sure what that new shirt is hanging in my wadrobe then, but it certainly looks Belgian to me!

Each to their own as they say, but having seen all these shirts 'in the flesh' the English one is the 8) est. The Italian 'black' is nice as well. Whether they're worth £100 is another matter

There is definitely a Belgian one.

Edit - that should read the GB one rather than English.

I guess the plain white ones would be a good contrast but dont' forget the matching cap of course!

It's UK rather than GB dude, don't forget the northern irish.

I put that as Rapha states it's Britian.

Before any more cash is parted with, have a look at the new Assos Mille shirt that Marcel Wust is wearing in the bike test feature of the new edition of Procycling. White and black but it does look good in the Majorcan sun. Having said that, if I was riding a Pinarello/Colnago/Viner etc, the Rapha Italian jersey is THE accessory to have. Now, to look at the Belgian one again.

  • Aggieboy, Rapha's website also states that Britain is one of Europe's leading cycling countries, so I wouldn't pay too much attention.

that new Assos s/s Mille does look rather smart as well... decisions, decisions :?

The big question is which of these is best suited to the less talented rider

Yes, I saw that. I should have just stuck to 'the red one is the 8) est' (imho).

A little OT, but does the 60% polyester weave not defeat the anti-stink object of the Merino?

I've never had sportwool, having always gone for the pure stuff 8)

I had a country jersey which I ended up selling on ebay. It was very smart until the pockets were used, then it stretched down to below the saddle. I like the styling, but I don't think the fit is a patch on Assos or even Shutt VR. I have jerseys by both of these companies and I think they are much more practical!

It is certainly true that you dont come back smelling "as fresh as a daisy" but its certainly an improvement over 100% synthetic shirts. I dont sweat a lot (mainly cause I dont try very hard!) but I can comfortably get a couple of rides out of a rapha jersey before having to wash it.

Nickwill - Thanks for the kind words. I agree the pockets on our jerseys are great... We had this quote from a Fitness Editor of a well known weekly cycling mag as part of a mini review on our new spring wear:-

"I've used your jersey now and I have to say I am impressed. Prior to wearing it I was convinced that the pockets would sag down. I tried to load it up with tube, pump, multi-tool, gas and gels and no sag at all! The fit is very flattering and I like the gripper at the back. It was a spot-on size for me ( normally 8-10). The detail on the back pocket is subtle and stylish. Thats a thumbs up from me."

You should have sent it back. Maintaining a premium brand is as much about customer service as the products themselves. I expect they would have sent you a new one or offered a refund. I've never had to return anything, but opinions from those that have tend to be positive.

Just had a look at the new Assos Mille Jersey. Wilst it looks nice, its really no different to the Equipe jersey in style which I was selling for £49 per jersey! But, each to their own!
  • The Shutt jerseys look great and good value too, may well 'invest' in one, anyone comment on the sizing, how they fit?

I have several Rapha jerseys and whilst quite nice especially with contrasting arm warmers they are hugely overpriced IMO and riding recently in London it seems to be wall to wall. I lost count of cyclists in their Rapha Sunday best.....

so, does sportwool suit a UK summer season?

I've only used lycra based stuff to date and want a jersey that is suited to all summer long riding. I noticed Rapha have a more lightweight jersey targetted at summer conditions as well.

What are people's experiences with these merino mixes during summer?

Flanners - You're not wrong, they are great value, new customers are always very impressed with the quality and style, especially when they realise we handmake them in the UK.

I'd say they we're spot on with UK body sizes.. We made a real effort when we started last year to design our garments for UK cyclists. I am a big lad 6'2" and 44" chest. The XL is just right, not too race fit, but not touring flappy either... I can still manage a large if I want a racefit.

Shameless plug...We've a special offer running this month to newsletter subscribers, buy any 2 jerseys and get a free pair of bibs worth £29.

Check out the FB page for some more offers etc..

IMHO its better than lycra as it doesn't wet out and get clammy. We have a review of one of our jerseys in Bicycling Australia and he loved using it in 40 deg heat. Our team Orbea-FGS are going to be racing in it this year!

Its not like the old wool jersey I used back in the 80's.. You will love it whether us or Rapha you must give it a try!
