Flapjack Recipes

I've read various topics on here about food to take while out riding, etc and the home made flapjack is a popular one. I think i've made it once in the past just from a recipe in a Bero book or something like that.

So i though i would ask you for your recipes so others can benefit from them as well.

Perhaps we can get a sticky thread created with various home made out on the bike food recipes. Not sure.

I'm a complete road beginner so don't have one to share. Will look for the flapjack one i did though and post that later.

It would definitely have to be a sticky thread...

sounds good. You've inspired me to make flapjacks tomorrow now. I'll post any revelations. Hooray!

I've made mine so often I know the recipe off by heart.

    200g of oats
100g of flavourings (choose what you like, nuts, apricots, choc chip if you want).
    100g butter
    50-75g of brown sugar
    50g of flour
2 tablespoons of syrup or honey (I prefer honey but both are nice)

    * Put oats, flavourings and flour into mixing bowl
    * Melt brown sugar, butter and honey in seperate bowl and pour into mixture
    * Mix together and put in grease proof dish, making sure mixture is packed down well
    * Stick in over at 180 degree for 20-25 mins, (I do 25)
    * Cut into slices while warm

    Done

I don't know the exact measures, I just go by sight.
    *Oats
    *Bag of mixed dried fruits
    *Macademia nuts
    *Honey
    *Splash of orange juice.

Put the fruit and nuts into a blender for a few seconds so it's chopped roughly. Stir in the oats, honey and juice. Turn out onto a baking tray and cook for about 20 mins @200c.
Once cooled I cut them into good sized slabs.

-Take 2 shoes (also known as a pair)
    - Add 1 jacket (if you think it's a bit nippy outside)
    - You'll need some money. I usually go for a 50p and a 10p coin, but three 20p coins will do
    - Walk down to the corner shop (around 1 minute)
    - Purchase flap jack from shopkeeper
    - Smalltalk with shopkeeper optional
    - Unwrap flapjack and enjoy at your lesiure

One for flapjack and one for sticky date cake. You can add up to 100g of nuts and dried fruit to the flapjack one before it starts to fall apart! Enjoy.

To be fair, they are like 80p for 8 pieces? from Tesco. I took 3 of them today and went out on a 50 mile ride and my energy really began to run out quickly so I'm not "sold" on flapjacks personally. Felt like shit by the time I got home and have the feeling narrowly missed a bonk there. Was going easy as well. Better foods out there imo. Does anyone know how many grams of flapjack should be consumed/per hour? Or how many till you stop gaining any extra energy as your body can't process it faster??

I tend to go for fruit cake these days, but I like a spot of apple-raisin-and-cinammon flapjack. Mmmm.......

Can only speak for mine and I tend to eat one large one on 50-70 miles, and I usually push it around 17.5 to 18.5 mph average. Although, I leave the house on a full load so only really consume it if I want to finish the ride strong. I guess the eqivalent would be 1 mule or clif bar.
  • Live off flapjack.

My tried n tested honed recipe is:

    300g marg / butter
    160g granulated sugar
    Dollop of golden syrup

    Melt together in a pan

    750g value oats

    Mix well - 15 mins @ 200 deg

Melt 100 - 125g dark chocolate over a "bain marie". (sit chocolate in a glass bowl in a pan of boiling water). Or you could just melt it in microwave...

    Spread choc over top.
    Leave to cool
Burn mouth on hot flapjack you were too tempted to taste...
