Updating a Garmin 705....

Hi all,

Anyone know where there are idiot guides to updating a Garmin 705.

My machine keeps dropping data. If I set off on a ride, I end up riding at 45 mph uphill, no miles, no calories. Furthermore, mileage is waaayyy out - 10 miles covered reads as 2 miles.

Have to keep rebooting it. Sensor seems set up well and lights up. Spoke to my retailer who suggested an update?

But, I am far from an I.T whizz kid so any pointers would be a big help.

Thanks in advance,

Pete.

    Pete,

Sounds like it may be faulty rather than in need of an update? Are you using it with a GSC 10 at all?

For the firmware update, go to the Garmin website and run the online updater, it'll all be explained as you go through the process.

As is - out of the box so to speak. Thanks for the link. I will update it tonight and give it a whirl, but very very annoying considering the cost of the thing....

Appreciate your help. I too suspect it is faulty....

If there's an auto calibrate wheel size option (as there is with my 310xt) then the general advice seems to be to switch it off and manually enter the wheel size. The device will take speed from the GSC-10 over GPS-based speed.

Definitely want to make sure you've got the latest firmware before you do anything else though.
    More problems but still living....

I'll second this...sounds like a dodgy unit and can't really see how an update will make much difference to those problems.
  • had a problem with my 705, earlier in the year, when a 30 mile ride, got recorded by the garmin as over 600 miles! which only took 2 1/2 hours - I'm so proud of my average speed

I put it down to the extreme cold (-2C)

Try ringing Garmin directly. Whenever I have had cause to speak to them the service and help has been top drawer.

Have you tried it WITHOUT the sensor?

The gps alone should give accurate enough readings.

Unless indoors I don't see the point of the sensor, it's one more thing to go wrong. Ok I I know it also records cadence but we all know that cadence is a 'red herring' anyway.

Do you know what firmware and gps chipset number you are running? That might be of use to get more help here, as you may already have all the current updates.

    +1, never used the sensor.

Agree if it's doing that out of the box, it doesn't sound good.

Maybe worth trying a "Hard Reset" and/or "Satellite Reset" on the unit before calling Garmin or updating the firmware though.

    A soft reset
With the unit on press "mode" and "reset/lap" simultaneously. This will reset the Edge and power off without erasing data.

    A hard reset
With the unit off press and hold "mode" and "Power" until the message comes up asking you to earse all user data. Then select yes. NB Deletes all saved history and user info, screen settings etc!

    Satellite Reset
With the unit powered off, press and hold ZOOM OUT + POWER until the Edge powers on. The unit should then go outside for a full 20 minutes to reacquire satellites

Thanks all - will have a look later and perhaps call Garmin when I can.

Annoying really, but hopefully can be put right. Somehow.

Have done the update. Will take it out for a spin now, thankfully, the update process was a lot easier than I expected....
