Sad & tragic for his family.

It doesn't even register on my radar though - he was not someone who had any part / influence in my life

  • Sounds tragic according to the news.

To be honest, I've never heard of him before....I'm the fashion shop's antithesis.

mmm, I had never heard of him either. I watched some news programme last night and someone said "people will remember where they were when they heard this for years to come". Baffled me because I had forgotten already and it was earlier that day.

The media do seem to think everybody is like everybody else, though. Personally, I don't give two figs about the olympics but for some reason the media thinks "the whole country is eagerly anticipating them..."

He was an interesting person, who challenged a lot of the fashionistas' 'rules' on style etc.

Not sure I particularly liked what he designed, but the ability to bring interesting and quite challenging design into catwalk shows will be missed.

I won't miss the championing of low rise jeans, or boys with jeans worn under their @rses...

RIP Lee. I was pretty shocked to hear this; Lee's a bit older than me but we're from the same generation, and I've kept tabs on his work over the years, as one of the brightest lights from the 90's London art world. A brilliant designer who loved his mum.

He was great in the Great Escape wasn't he?

To be honest I'd never heard of him until today. He was very young - tragic for those who knew him.

To be fair I'm an old art college boy, so was aware of him and his work. My good lady didn't know who he was as neither did my work colleagues, which is fair enough. Still very sad and tragic news.

Whatever you think about fashion, Lee (Alexander) McQueens passing is a sad and tragic waste.

    RIP.

in other news a cyclist was killed in london the other day although the death of a fashion designer totally overshadows such sad news on this cycling site

What is "totally overshadows"?! The death of a young public figure was reported on a general interest forum. Is there really some argument to be had about that?

Not really, just personal opinion, which will just lead to about 15 pages of non-sense arguments

not looking to argue but i find the whole fashion world pretentious beyond belief. and as for a public figure it all depends on your perception of public, , when gok wan get found with a carrier bag over his head are we going to go into national mourning once more

perhaps after a select bunch of mincing fools discuss the artistic merits of the carrier bag, tesco is so 2009 he should have gone with an asda bag for life

That'll depend on the colour and style if the bag, and how it works with the rest of his outfit......

the eco friendliness of the asda bag would be offset by the bold signature stripes that adorn the tesco bag,

I doubt he'd have such an appreciation of irony

Have to admit, not having heard the news and seeing this topic yesterday I read it as Steve McQueen and thought "he's been dead years". Had never heard of this bloke before that but if he is responsible for jeans hanging below your arse his work won't be missed!

To be fair to Gok Wan, he's more than a pretentious fashion designer in my eyes. To my mind, he's doing some good work in trying to change perceptions about how we view women in our society - trying to make women who don't, can't, won't and never will (barring surgery) look like an FHM model, feel slightly more self worth in the face of overwhelming adversity (the saturation of the media with perfect looking women).

Having said that, I've never seen his show. Not my cuppa tea
  • I should add, before I come across as holier than thou, I'm part of the problem as a willing consumer of these images of 'perfect' women.
