I've put about two stone of it on over the last four months as I lost my "Mojo" and have not been riding.

Obviously I need to cut down on the beer (I do enjoy a pint or three) but is the best way to loose the weight to ride at a lower intencity but for long periods/distance? Not that I'm fit enough to ride very hard anyway such are my lack of fitness levels.

My last ride was about 10 days ago and I averaged 16mph over an hour and forty mins and I felt "tatered".

Hopefully Alex_Simmonds or BeaconRuth will be along soon with the science stuff, but from my experience rides of 3hrs plus at a comfortable pace help me with lard-loss. I gained a stone in 3 weeks after a shoulder operation in October  It's all gone now, and I've only been riding again since Crimbo.

This has been done to death on here - try searching "fat burning myth" for starters

The best way is to burn more calories than you eat.

    End of thread.

Must admit that is a mantra I've always believed in, not "rocket science" is it. I was wondering what type of riding achieved quickest results without being stupid about it.

  • Lucky git, you managed 16 mph over an hour and forty minutes as a self confessed lard ass! I've trained for weeks and have only just managed that!

Seriously though, if you have been out for a while that might be a bit too much to start back, easy to pick up an injury.... speaking from far too much experience on the subject...

Build up more gradually, start with low impact aerobic for a couple of weeks gradually increasing the time, then start to add interval work outs, mix it up and keep it interesting.

If you can drop the booze and be careful with your diet the weight will come down, but avoid losing no more than 2lb (1kg) a week.
