I'm looking at wheels for my Epic atm.

I'm considering XTR rims amongst others but weighing up the rotor options.

I've found Avid centrelock rotors (185/160) on the web today which are slightly pricer than the std rotors, but my current Epic discs would fit straight onto my stumpy, so at least I can make use of them in the future.

    Decisions, decisions....

I just had a quick google for the rotors too .... they do seem a little pricey but if you can use your other disc's they thats cool .... :D

I would like to have used the XTR rotors i got from the insurance but Shimano dont do a 185 disc (to my knowledge) so i was a little p*ssed off about that .... :(

Let us know what you decide *AL*

I ordered the clear, they send you 3 pairs of crankskins in the pack and they usually take less than a week to arrive from the States.

  • Hi everyone, im new to Bikeradar. But have just purchased a FSR Carbon and it is wonderful. I previously had a Carrera banshee from Halfords (stop laughing at the back)as I wasn't sure if I would get into mountainbiking after a 10 year break.

I then signed up for the 75 miles London to South coast off road for the british heart foundation, so started using the bike lots, and decided to invest in a "proper bike".

After reading a couple of reviews and this thread I decided to spend some of my hard earned.

It is awsome so thanks for your comments.

    lovely bikes guys!

seriously considering an epic when next years are out with the 2x10 set up and the option of 120mm travel (Epic Evo or whetever it will be called). However i have one reservation that maybe you epic owners can help me with... the brain...

How well does that system work? I have a hardtail at the minute but could do with a 'smoother experience' when in the saddle over bumpy stuff... i've tried to look up a few guides to the inner workings of the brain. i probably don't understand it fully but from what i gather it needs to rear wheel to first go up before it activates the shock? if this is the case how does it handle, for example, just riding off a curb in the saddle, does the rear shock kick in and smooth that out? are there ever instances where maybe it hasn't kicked in when you thought it should have?

    cheers guys

i'm pretty sure one of the guys on here will educate us both :?
  • How's the epic going, had mine a few weeks now and it gets better and better, decided to go spd's in the end , never tried them before but I'm suprised how good they are. Have your upgrades made much difference? Tyres? Etc.

Hey Dickeniffer bike is running sweet thanks matey :)

This is the 1st time i've ever ridden with spd's too and im loving them also...

As far as the upgrades making a difference, i never rode the bike with original wheels and tyres on so i cant realy comment :?

The cranset does feel like i can get more power down and i have just fitted today a new XTR front mech so i will update you when i go out at the weekend on that

Bar/Stem/Seatpost upgrades i dont think make much of a impact performance wise ..... but do look sweet IMO  lol

How are you getting on with yours ? sound like you have some upgrade gremlins trying to get out :D

and still waiting for some picks of your bike with mud on it .... lol
  • Must admit, I keep looking at looks of nice carbon bits and lots of stuff with the letters.... X.....T......R hmmmm I can feel a spending spree coming on.
Xtr chainset would be very nice , I think that could be next for me, got some panaracer firepro tyres in yellow coming, it is a wonderful bike though.
Got to stop looking at the pretty carbon frame as I'm going to hit a tree.

TBH, I'd look at swapping the wheels before the cranks.

The standard wheels are quite flexy and they're not the lightest either, a lighter stiffer set will spin up a lot quicker, the difference is very noticeable.

After that, the world's your lobster.
  • What are the tyres like ive tried various sets but cant seep to get it right, most of my current riding is hard pack with a little bit of mud chucked in, i've ordered some panaracer jobbies in the hope I get on with them.

  • As regards how the brain works, it is very simple, you ride along and the brain does magic things.

The honest answer is nobody knows, it's one of lifes amazing unanswered questions. I bloody works though.

 ..... this was about half way around ..... at the end she was well mucky :o
  • Really nice, lovely looking bike, especially with the upgrades, however I do confess that the strange and mysterious material that is known as 'carbon' does scare me, especially at the prices these bikes go for

It scare the B'Jesus out my missus too ....usualy when i have the debit card in hand
  • Lovely bike..i really want one of those. If you ever feel the need to throw it away then there is a willing home to take it from you haha.

What are you going to change next? How much does it weigh?
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.
  • Cheers mikeyj28 :D

I think if you have a word with my missus she will throw it away in a second ..... seem to spend more time with it then her

I'm thinking next upgrades will be some X0 shifters and matching rear mech and maybe a new saddle.

As for the weight i keep meaning to get it weighed at my LBS(Sherwood Pines), but everytime i get there i get side tracked with the trails and forget...... i reckon i've forgotten 4 or 5 times  . I will get it weighed one day :x

Are you looking at getting a 2010 they have dropped a few ££££ in price or looking @ the 2011 ones ?

Just ordered one of these today after years of road biking. I am 10 mins away from afan valley and now i am missing out.

I ordered through Tredz and had 20% for 2010 model.

Any hints/tips re bike. Read up loads but still confused by the suspension etc.

Are there any items which you recommend replacing ?

    Cheers :D

  • Hiya bilabonic

Welcome to the Epic club mate :D

Sounds like you have got a bargin there, 20% off is awsome

Regarding setting up the suspension ..... the manual that comes with the bike is pretty easy to follow (i managed it so it must be simple )

As far as replacing stuff .... i would ride it as standard to start with and see how you go ... wheels would be the 1st upgrade to make a difference
