Consistent effort during intervals

Hi all,
I've done a few Sufferfest Downward Spiral sessions on rollers. The last 2 sessions I have remembered to attach my computer, so I can monitor speed as a measure of effort as well as HR.
On the first set I can manage around 33-34mph for the intervals, falling of to around 20mph for the rests. On the second set though, I'm struggling to keep it in the 30s for the intervals and around 17/18 for the rests.
Should I be backing off a bit for the first set in order that I can maintain a similar effort for the second set ? In terms of perceived effort I'm in a similar amount of pain for both sets, so I'm not slacking !
My HR just gets steadily higher throughout, so I guess is fairly irrelevant...

Don't back off on the first set - just go faster on the second !
No I think the perceived wisdom is go for an even effort so pace the first so you can complete the second the same - but I'm just going by what I've read - mostly on here.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -

Yes I've read this too. Just wondered why really...0 -
Ok..... If you are using a HR, you should have noticed by now which HR causes you to blow up and go over the top.
For me that figure is about 175, once I get there I back off a tad, to just below 170, this I can maintain for both sets of intervals. I'm guessing that perhaps you push a bit too far and are not able to recover, or perhaps you are just starting out at a unrealistic level (easy to do).
Of course the main battle is with the mind, that can easily tell you that you are finished when actually you have more to give, the mind is a powerful thing! Just my take on things and worth exactly what you paid for them!0 -
Ideally you'd be riding at an even power and because of heart rate drift this will naturally mean an increase in heart rate for the same power. If you keep your HR the same you'll be doing less work by the end of the second set. You could try riding at an even speed since you don't have a power meter.0

Thanks Stonehouse and Inseine but if you recheck my original post you'll see that I'm using speed as a measure of effort.
Apologies if this wasn't clear...0
