Modifed Magicshine P7

Here is my effort at modifying the mounting bracket for the DX Magicshine P7 light. Credit for the idea goes to Moggy82 from the MTB buying advice – what lights discussion thread.

I found that the standard ‘O’ ring fixing that came with the light tended to allow the light to droop forward on my handle bars and I was forever adjusting the light back up as I was riding along. Moggy’s mod takes an Electron light fixing bracket, cost £2 to £3 from CRC, which screws straight into the mounting point where the original fixing attaches. The fixing screw which comes with the electron bracket can be used but requires a spacer to be inserted between the lamp and the bracket as the screw is a little too long as it is. A drop of loctite should help to hold the screw in place.

My spacer is a small tap washer, this provides a bit of sealing to cover the fixing hole and compresses just enough to give a firm connection between the light and the bracket. I decided to seal the cable entry point where it enters the lamp body with epoxy resin but silicone sealant would probably give a better seal.

You don’t need to open the light to make this mod. The Electron bracket can be tightened on to over sized bars and comes with rubber sleeve to fit standard bars.

Nice one! I'm struggling along with the mount supplied with the light and I agree that it isn't that good.

I've had to mess about with it as the screw (a 4mm) pulled through the mounting plate so I've bodged it with a longer screw and washer..

  • Hi itb,

I'm not sure if my pm sent, (the technology is beyond me!)

I used the same Electron double bracket handle bar mount as the originator Moggy82, just because it was in stock, he and I believe the single one would do as well.

    Double £2.99, here,
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=12871

    Single £1.99, here,
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=6091

The screw that comes with the double and joins the two halves of the bracket can be re used as it fits the mounting hole in the bottom of the lamp housing. The top half of the electron bracket can be discarded, (not required).

Remove the present fixing saddle from the bottom of the Magicshine, just one screw. You then require a spacer between the lamp housing and the electron bracket partly because this gives enough space for the cable to clear the bracket and also to allow you to use the electron's fixing screw which is a bit too long. I used a small black tap washer and cut a small groove on one edge to prevent the cable leaving the lamp from being crushed. This gives you the opportunity to apply some sealant to the bottom of the lamp and cable route into the lamp which is unprotected, place the washer on and bolt the bracket through the washer into the original fixing point on the bottom of the lamp base. I pushed the present cable grommet up as far as it would go and sealed around it with epoxy resin glue, but silicone would probably be better as a water sealant. I just didn’t have any to hand!

  • How come my URL didn't work :(

The Electron double bracket is described as the "Bracket kit for EHP 310"

I just searched for electron on the chain reaction cycles web site.

Does anyone know if this works for the MagicShine MJ-818 'Mickey Mouse' light as well?

Yes, this is a 'must do' mod for the MJ-816 as the standard mount fails to hold the light securely on even slightly rough ground!

    Good post cheers!

Personally I have no problems with the O ring setup on my handlebars, it seems to mount easily enough and stay in place, though once I lose the O ring or it breaks then I'll be hunting down this thread.

What have you done with the battery mount? It velcros round my stem OK but it worries me that the velcro is going to come undone if I hit a bump... I'll lose a battery or, more likely, find a pendulum attached to the bars when doing silly speeds on a hill. In the dark.

There are plastic clips on the battery pouch; has any bright spark got a device to fasten these together non permanently?

Cheers bud. My electron bar clamp has arrived today, I just need the lights to attach to it now. Magic Shine UK were expecting a delivery tomorrow but this has now been bumped to next week.

Here are a few pics of the battery holder i made up using a plastic container with screw on lid, a rubber grommet and a bit of drilling out in the lid to accomodate the rubber grommet.

The battery and light unit cables are long enough to reach all bottle holders along the full length of the downtube and with enough slack for turning of the bars.....

Lights turned up on Wednesday and boy are they bright!!!!! I have used a half inch rubber tap washer between the lights and the clamp but it was too thick so I have had to slice about a third of the thickness off it.

I've just had my new MJ-816 delivered and the Electron Double Bracket as well. Can you tell me exactly what rubber tap washer people have used to keep the connection completely still?
Also did you need a longer screw?
    Cheers

I just went to my local hardware shop and got a half inch rubber tap washer. The screw that comes with the clamp is fine but as previously mentioned, I had to thin the washer down a bit as it was just a touch too thick.

  • Thanks, I went to homebase today anyway and bought a 3/8 inch rubber washer and sliced it down by a third and it has fit it great and keeps it steady. Just need to test it on the trails now!

My battery shorted after a soaking. After taking it apart and soldering it back together it seems as good as new.

The batteries fit nice and snug inside a play-doh pot, if you have such a thing lieing around.

I've then popped that into a bottle so it fits into a bottle cage.

  • Here's mine a bottle even though it doesn't need to be. Just easier to mount on the bike. Hole in the bottom just in case any moisture gets in.

  • This is great, thank you.

I've just bought an MJ-816 and the O Rings are pretty poor still.

Is the Electron mount still the best way do you think?

CRC have a whole page of light mounts, I was just wondering if anyone has tried any others?

  • Re the battery pack, love the idea of the plastic pot, i suppose a cheap bottle would work or the fake bidons that carry tools etc.

I just use a simple Velcro strap, the type to tie up cables, from pound shops and put that through the two plastic rings to secure the battery pack to stem/frame etc. Works well for me.

Great mod on the light bracket, I think I will need to do that, thanks

  • Just as a word of warning for anyone trying this, I ordered a single mount from CRC as per this:

    6091.jpg

What I received is different, it's still a branded Electron single mount bracket, but has a combined screw to tighten the clamp and attach the light:

    IMG-20111004-00361.jpg

I'm sure I can probably adapt it somehow, but after a quick fiddle it's certainly not going to be a quick fix like the last one was. I've messed about with it now so can't return it.

Not at all- I also received the new style one and it still mounts directly to the lamp, the only difference being that the bolt tightens the mount and affixes the light unit.

The only "hack" was to peel off the foam strip from the lamp mount and place it on the underside of the lamp unit prior to screwing in the tightening bolt. I'll post a pic if required.
Very pleased with it all and the prices paid. My only deliberation is whether to have the battery pack velcroed to the head tube or tucked into a caged water bottle.

(Also got 2 rubber&velcro lock blocks at $3 for torch use rather than the £10 ea. for the Two Fish ones.)

The CRC advert does refer to this mount as the 'other one' is sold out. Just check closely.
  • CRC weren't over helpful in their reply, it's barely worth returning it as the postage will be more than the refund!

No matter now anyway, sorted it:

  • HI Quattrojames,

Sorry for being thick, but I cant see how that would fit together - I had a fiddle with mine yesterday ( ) and cant see how I could make this work - any chance of posting a pic of them disassembled?

I phoned CRC this morning complaining that I had been sent the wrong mount and they have refunded my account - a whole £2!

    Thanks for your help

CRC offered to refund me too, but I'd already butchered it by that point!
