Has anyone ridden Gun Hill near Meerbrook/Wincle. I was recommended to take on this climb but to be honest I was a little disappointed as it was not all it was made out to be difficulty wise. Compared to School Lane, Bradnop or even Mow Cop I just didn't find it that challenging. Yes its long but not exactly steep. Can anyone recommend anymore challenging climbs in this area??
Cheers.
Cheers.

Easy peasy! The TOB went up it last year so I did it while spectating.
There's an area nearby which people refer to as "the roaches" - some short stretches of 20% and slightly above in the most empty barron landscape you can imagine - there's literally nothing for miles.
Here's the route I did after the TOB stage. Starts at Gun hill. Pretty savage.

A few suggestions:
Easing Lane, which runs from near Thorncliffe to Morridge Top (take the right turn just before you come into Thorncliffe from the Moss Rose pub direction).
Going up Thorncliffe Bank itself brings you out at the end of Morridge Top just before the viewpoint down to the Roaches.
The road from The Lazy Trout at Meerbrook (at the bottom of Gun Hill) up to the Roaches is mostly fairly gentle but narrow, twisty and steep towards the end.
If you like main roads, go up Cat Tor - this is the section of the Buxton Road from the dip just after Blackshaw Moor heading up to the Winking Man pub.
Although it isn't the steepest hill in the district, I find Gun Hill good for reps because it's relatively short but has a couple of places where it kicks up, so you can vary the climb with intervals of honking and sitting.0 -
gunn hill is a good climb, not killer though
Les West would "big ring" it!!!_______________________________________________________________________________________

I would say that it probably is big ringable. Just not as steep as I thought at all but yeah nice climb all the same and nice area to ride in.0

its a nice ride (depending where your coming from/to) from where i am anyway..........
alsager, then up the brickworks climb, drop down then up to erm i cant think where its called!!! but you then drop down a crazy descent into the goyt valley, up out of there to the top of the cat and fiddle, straight across towards the roaches, then turn off the main road past the roaches, drop down inot meerbrook, up gunn hill, drop down again! up the "backside" of the cloud, drop into congleton and home!
phew!!!_______________________________________________________________________________________

Have a look at Pyms Chair which you can get to off the Macclesfield to Kettleshulme rd. It's a regular hill climb event and should do the job for you!0

One of the toughest climbs in the area for me.0 -
Gun Hill is tough but not the hardest in the Leek area.
I live in Bradnop so know School Lane very well. If you follow School Lane up to where it joins Morridge, that's very tough - known as High Cross.
Other tough hills locally include the road WNW out of Hollinsclough and the road east out of Langley (near Macclesfield) heading east towards Macclesfield Forest.0 -
Pyms Chair is awesome I love that climb, but I'd say the hill down from that reservoirs in the goyt valley that climbs to the top of Pyms Chair is harder.
Pyms chair hits around 23%.0
