OK.. 1st off I'm an Apple fanboi and have been for 20 odd years. But this glorified iPod touch is just pointless IMO.

Anyone got any good opinions? Coz personally I just can't see the frackin point!!!!

It's a big pile of w**k. There really is no point to it at all. If you want an iPhone, get one, if you want a MacBook, get one. This is a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none gadget with a shiny apple on it.
Also, the iPad to iPhone is what a mobile is to this:

It's very much a middle ground device. Could imagine my wife would be happy with it (browse the web (at a decent-ish size), write the odd email, watch movies and listen to music).

For me I struggle to see a use. I can't use it for actual "computing" and until there is an app that can capture input from a stylus (wouldn't need to recognise handwriting) it wouldn't even be a useful as a conference tool.

I'm sure it'll sell millions though.
  • But a MacBook isn't much more expensive, and has at least 10 times the amount of hard drive space. 16Gb is laughable these days, and then they're going to release a more expensive one with 64Gb which is just daylight robbery!

I have to say though, I hope people get this and then try showing off with it, because then I can show them my MacBook Pro and have a "Well mine can do this" faceoff which all the iPhone users seem to want to do with my mobile.

I used to love apple, but now they've just fallen up their own arses and think they're the best thing ever. Time for me to learn ubuntu me thinks....

But isn't as portable. This isn't a device to replace a laptop for most functions, just those few less intensive task that a lot of people use computers for. If the main thing you do is facebook and email (and I know a lot of people like that), surely this device is pretty good. Especially with 3G connectivity.
  • I'd say that this is just as portable as a laptop. It doesn't fit in your pocket, it'll need a bag. If people are buying it purely to use facebook and email, then why not buy the iPhone?

Because the screen on a smartphone is too small. I agree that it's not pocket sized. But it is more portable than a laptop, it's not like carrying a 15" laptop is the same as a 17" laptop.

Again, I wouldn't buy one. Seems to be a lot of hate for the poor thing though.

Seems to do all the stuff you do on all your other gadgets.... web browsing, email, mircro apps on something that's not as portable or not as good as the iPhone or Macbook that you already have.

    Have a look here... http://www.apple.com

And what's wrong with it here: http://i.gizmodo.com/5458382/

    Big thumbs down from me.

    I just don't get the i-phone.

My mobile, free on contract, has:

8.1MP camera that works (i-phone one is cack)
    wifi
    GPS that works
    Reasonable battery life
Can download all sorts of apps
    Loads of clever software
Very high quality sound with headphones
Can be plugged straight into my car "Aux" socket
Can play ANY music format dragged and dropped straight off a PC
Is half the size of an i-pod
    Is much more robust
    Isn't touch-me-up screen so won't break
    Doesn't make me look gay

Yet everyone raves about the i-phone and i-pod. My phone does both jobs and more and was FREE.

The i-mac is a different kettle of fish and DOES seem to offer advantages over a Windows PC, hence probably getting two shortly.

So buy a 13" laptop. It's barely bigger than the iPad which is 9.5"x7.5". I expect a lot of people will scratch the surface of this iPad quite quickly.

Also, having just seen a longer video of the Steve Nobs thing here he basically shows you how to use a mac, as it takes him 10 seconds on explaining the difference between it and an iPhone (it's bigger  ) but then shows the functions that mac, in fact, most laptops and phones, have been doing for some time now.

If it was cheap I could see the point of it. But I'm sure it won't be, if it's $499, then it'll probably cost £499 here! Is it essentially a touch screen netbook that's had it's legs broken?

As others have said, why bother? If all you're doing is checking Facebook then use your phone (not an iPhone, just a phone) or your computer. Don't carry round something that's actually pretty big (won't fit in a pocket) but lacks the functionality of a netbook.

That Gizmodo link makes it look awful. No flash, only Apple approved apps allowed, no multitasking for crying out loud! Who thought that was a good idea, want to listen to music while reading an eBook or checking your emails? Bzzzzt, nope!

mac man: iPod or iPhone? Jr has a 3G iPod and it is a nifty little gadget. Yes it plays music & videos but the apps are also pretty good. Loads of free non-crappy games and £5.99 for GTA: Chinatown is a steal. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, e-Book reader, e-mail, Google Maps, alarm clock, spirit level (useful for measuring head angles  )...

So an iPod touch? Which are massively expensive. And you can only use where there's wifi. I can get Facebook, Youtube and Twitter on my phone. A 2 year old Nokia. It's also got GPS, so in a month I'll get free voice guided navigation. I get my emails through a gmail app, it's got an alarm clock, as has every phone and most mp3 players. And I've got a spirit level in the toolbox

This what i don't get about the iPad.... most of what makes and iPhone/iPod work is its portability... it's a computer in your pocket AND its a phone. This thing is a notebook without a keyboard to be used in the home or office.

Battery life may be 10 hours but how many will be left around with the battery running down and then when you need it you have to plug the damn thing in. And so if it is just a home/office item why would I watch movies on it instead of a decent plasma? people watch movies on an iPhone when they're bored on the Tube... not really for the 'experience' of the movie itself. How many will choose to view movies on this instead of a proper TV? Doesn't make sense to me.

I can see it being useful in 'vertical' markets... maybe in hospitals as a mobile terminals to view patient data... or using it as a mobile presentation tool. But for entertainment? Forget it. Just my opinion....

NEW shiny thing make everything all better, say clever science man yesterday.

Science man say shiny thing is telly and books. And good for seeing photos of you and everyone, and also naked people who do mucky things.

Science man say shiny thing 'changes game' and now all the other science men must go away and be sad.

Science man say: "All things everyone have are rubbish. Look! Telly and books! That will be £400 please thank you."

Nikki, a girl who has had 27 birthdays and works in a big building, say: "Oooooooooh. It do telly. I will see telly on it and make it help me buy nice hats.

"And look! It fit in bag where I have keys and little talkie box and red goo I put on face."

Tom, all grown-up man from busy place, say: "I very busy man who need see telly on big metal tube that take me to busy job.

"But look! It also play game! I play noisy game on metal tube and be happy."

And Bill, really, really old man who sits in chair all day, say: "It make words happen by pointing at it. Oooooooooh.

"I will make it help me say clever words to newspaper about gypsies and Pakistan.

    "AND IT DO TELLY!"

If only their Mac books were as reasonably priced as the £300-odd base model, I quite fancy this but have absolutely no need for it. Its the perfect form factor for me too; unless anyone can recommend a similarly-priced Windows 7 equipped slim-as laptop?

From what I can see, it's a device that's been designed to fill a hole in the market that isn't really there. The geeks have been jumping up and down about this for a couple of weeks now in anticipation. I imagine quite a few are now disappointed.

As has been said, if you want a small computer, you get a netbook. If you wan't one that fits in your pocket, you get a smartphone, if you want an all singing/dancing computer, you buy an all singing/dancing computer.
  • You realise the base model has just 16Gb flash drive? I'd just buy a £300 laptop with a 100Gb hard drive in it.

I'm a bit of a sad 'ooh shiny gadget must have it' type. GOt an Ipod Touch last summer and them work supplied me with an Iphone a couple of months later. You obviously dont need both, but I have to say I likey.

But its like owt else. If you dont like, you dont buy. Its not forced on you. Plenty of competition in the electronics world especially. Somebody somewhere makes something to suit everyone

I have an iPhone. and a laptop and a PC. and a big TV

dont need a iTouch as i have the iPhone the iPad is really just an iTouch with a bigger screen.

if i want to watch movies i have a TV.

i suppose it will make great targets for thieves though.
