Target practice

On my commute home from work last night I was riding down this road which is about quarter of a mile of straight along side a recreation ground. I was the only "traffic" on it and I could see a gang of 12-15 youths making their way down the road snowballing each other,

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist as to "what happens next?"

They were such crap shots I only got hit twice. F**kin' numpties.

I'm sure I'm not unique in having this happen am I?

No. Conditions were so ridiculously slippery and I was so sick of sliding off and the concentration required to stay on the bike that I took the bus yesterday. On the return journey some oik threw an ice ball against the window. Apart from a startling thump there was no damage. I do wonder what does, or doesn't go through the minds of these people?

    "Oik" ?!?!?!?!?

The '50s are calling, asking for their language back!

Why not 'oik'? Words do go in and out of fashion and are reused or recycled.

It's an old public-school boy way of refering to youths of a class lower than you. It's certainly not cool.

If you look like someone who would call them 'oiks' then it'd probably explain why they fancied throwing some ice at the window you were at!

Oh come off it - what kid hasn't thrown a snowball at passing traffic!?

Buses are the most obvious target anyway - I don't think I ever saw a cyclist to throw one at, but as a lad, probably would have done.

It's snowy - kids throw snowballs.

    Get over it.

Anyone who trows iceballs at a bus in order to break the window or startle the driver is by definition of a lower order. It was the bus they were aiming at...

Some kids threw a snowball at my car the other day - they were a bit startled as I skidded to a halt, got out and had a quiet word. Don't expect them to do it again (to me at least)

Yes - but anyone who throws a snowball at a bus that inadvertently contains ice is just youthfully exuberant...

All I'm saying is you're in danger of coming across as a Daily (hate) Mail reading "Hoodies are making my town centre a no-go zone" type, rather than the much more well-adjusted guy you obviously are.

We've experienced unprecedented snowfall - for most kids this will be the first real snow they've ever experienced - so give them a bit of slack.

I snowball my dog when I take it for walks but buses sound more fun - thanks.

Just throw one back if you're that worried.

It would have to be thrown with some force and probably contain a large stone to break a window, now that would display a good level of malice.

I was once on the bus to Perth, which does a couple of "there & back" diversions through villages on the way. In one village some kids pelted the bus at one point; so on the way back, the driver stopped just round the corner from them, the conductor got out and collected a small pile of snowballs, then as the bus drove slowly past the kids, door open, let fly! More than one direct hit.

As a student teacher, I once walked right through a crowd of about 200 kids having a massive snowball fight - I just stared them down and no-one threw one. Definitely a bit of a cinematic moment; although possibly, as I was new to the school, they just didn't recognise me.

Middle and upper? I don't tend to refer to people by their class anyway? Makes no difference to whether you're a good person or not.

Why what should I be calling them?

Last wednesday my mother nearly crashed her car when a "troupe" of 5 kids threw snowballs at her windscreen blocking her view. People have had their windscreen's broken by them, its not soft snow once you take a good throw into account.

Throwing snowballs at your mates is one thing, throwing them at others who may not be interested or pleased is another.

I find this exceedingly hard to believe unless there are stones in there.

Lighten up people, it's snow, throw snowballs!

I agree that it's fun to throw snowballs but not at passing motorists, passers-by least expecting it and cyclists.

There was a guy in the BEP recently who was a victim of a snowball breaking his windscreen. Unless ofcourse you're willing to donate your windscreen to science and try it  A good snowball can be compacted down to a solid lump almost as dence and hard as ice in the right hands.

What would the "someone" you refer to look like in your opinion? I'd be interested to know the type of person you feel it is justified to throw ice at just because of the way they "look".
