Right the more I look at more bikes the more confused I get.

I want a bike for race but also comfort on long trips, what a good carbon frame and top end bits. I really like the Pinarello and Wilier bikes.

Can anybody help please ??

i have a trek madone 5.2, yes its a bulk brand, but absolutely love it. I have the pro fit, yet still after 80 odd miles its still comfy. Accelerates and climbs really well.

No need for confusion at that budget. Get along to a recommended LBS and ask for a test ride and fit session. The bike you want is the bike that fits and suits your needs best. At that price you're not going to get a lemon. If you want bling and comfort then how about a Ti frame built up to what you want.

Epic Cycles used to offer Orbea Orca builds starting from a smidge over £2k. Might be worth a call or dropping them an email.

For £2k you could probably build a damn good bike. Some thing with Sram Force, a carbon frameset and mid-range wheels. Just have to shop around for the bits!

    +1 Poker Face.

You could be getting a £999 carbon frame of your choice. Equipped with:

    Ultegra SL £500
    Ultegra SL Wheels £220
    105 Pedals £35
Deda Finishing kit (Stem Seatpost Bars Tape) £145
    £60 Saddle of your choice
    Vittoria Diamante Pro's £40

Coming in at around £1950 - £2050. Order it all up. Build it yourself or get someone to do it for you (£50 - £75??). Just ask us for advice on where to get the best deals if you want to do this. All those prices are from online shops, all in stock.

Specialized £2K with 105 WTF!!!! Outrageous.

Choose a good frame, wheels and a gruppo Ultegra and Centaur is around £450; build or get it built, an rrp bike of £4-£5K, for around £2K!

Or a Planet X SL pro Carbon (flog the Model B wheels) with top end wheels, a superb bike light and fantastic ride quality imo for the money awesome value. Even better on a C2W variant.

Look for a 2009 bike for best bargain

    £2k is expensive for a 105 groupset- I bought a 2009 Roubaix with 105 kit for £1300- identical 2010 bike is £1700

Most bike shops will do a deal in January-Wife just bought a 2010 Ruby for £1350 ( £1600 list )

    - and for 2009 stock you may get 20% off if you haggle.

Apparently Planet X squeeze an £800 Ultegra group on a bike that costs £1000 so that might be worth a look as well as Ribble

There's also Dave Hinde-( you may or may not have a barge pole)

What carbon frames can you recommend for £1k? I am looking for a carbon frame with £1k ish budget and am struggling (altho I suspect I might need to look away from the Italian brands. I like the FP3 but I understand you can't get it on a frame-only basis)

Whilst were talking about building up a bike, is there much weight difference between a Trek 5 Series & 6 Series Frame?

For £2k I would get a decent frame, then groupset, then finishing kit, and then wheels. You can always upgrade at a later date.

Well I should imagine there's plenty around for £999.

Canyon Outlet has some Ultimate CF framesets (fork and stem/seatpost) for £999. Obviously limited sizes and colours. A brand new one is £1199 (with fork stem/seatpost)

Ribble do some decent carbon frames it seems. Alot less than £999 too.

Be-one at chainreactioncycles seem a good deal.

Planet X is way below £999 but they've got a new model in March according to a representative which is going to be very high quality.

Argon 18 Gallium is £1199 for Framset (forks and seatpost)
    Argon 18 Krypton is £849

    Cinelli Willin £999

    Ridley Excalibur £999

Just a case of looking around. I bet a few calls to bike shops would work out well too.

Apparently the new PX is built in a factory that makes some Colnago models? I was told the frame would be much more expensive than the SL.

I think off the peg bikes are good but once you know what you want and the riding you do a frameset and individual spec is the way to go. Any bike I have purchased has always been modified with bling. The standard parts stem, saddle, post, bars all go. So what is the point of paying through the nose for it. Some of what Spesh, CDale, Pinarello and alike spec their bikes with is shoddy to say the least. However off the peg bikes at the 3-5K mark obviously fair a bit better. For your £2K you could get such a good bike

However to shoot myself in the foot I paid £999 for the Cayo Ultegra SL, well actually around £650 through C2W and that is an awesome off the peg bike for the dough. Ditched the bars, stem, and seat though!

Doubt it will cost more than £999. Clearly aiming at a higher price point than the SL Pro, as the person eluded to.

Cervelo S1 frameset - £850. Not carbon, but aero, stiff and probably better than many carbon frames.

Would personally go with 2010 Sram Force Groupo.

But it's all personal preference. The OP hasn't bother to comment on whether he's looking for a pre-built bike or would consider building, etc.

Lol was going to put the S1 but thought it would be taking the p1ss a bit as he asked for carbon. I'd dearly love an S1

I have looked at the S1 and it is a gorgeous looking bike. I had been looking at carbon but have recently been looking at others too - just trying to find the right mix between brand, material and budget. (obviously once I've got a shortlist I will go to the next step)

I have a Cinelli Willin' frameset. Lovely piece of kit...
Fat Birds have it here for £899.

Well I don't race, but sportives. Obviously, the most important thing is that it looks cool 8) :D . I am actually reluctant to part company with my current bike but I think I need to size up. I have become accustomed to Italian but I don't think my budget will stretch that far for carbon......

You only think you need to size up? Or you know it, but are reluctant to make the move? :?

I think I know I do! Going for a measure-up this weekend. But then again I was sized up for this bike and it felt OK at the time (but that was off the back of riding a mtb every day and my riding style was different back then).
It's me that's set the ceiling on the budget. He'd double the budget if I gave the green light!
