Or do you see schools as a child minding service that become an inconvenience when they close in the best interests of often over 1000 people?
I'm not a parent so no, that's not what I think.
Can you explain to me why my employer doesn't shut our building, which also houses in excess of 1000 people over seven floors? Is my health and safety being jeopardised?
You are an ADULT!! (Or at least that's what you'd maybe have us believe......) Or would your mum sue the employer if you fell over and hurt yourself?!!0 -

In my school teachers were looking forward to a day off, and i doubt they would bother coming in even if they could.
I know students love days off, but i have a level exams next week and still need to be taught part of the course, so am pretty screwed really.
I suggest you stay home and swot up on your grammar and punctuation....that'll help with your exams too (never heard of independent learning??!!)0 -
la dama vecchia wrote:Teachers are there to educate your kids NOT babysit them for you!!! Of all the pathetic "teachers are lazy" crap posts I've seen on various forums, I've not seen one from a parent complaining that their offspring are missing out on education.....just the usual "I'm going to have to look after my own kids now" tripe!!
Headteachers make the decision to close schools, NOT teachers - if the school is open, teachers have to get there, otherwise (in many cases) they do not get paid. Teachers are employees, they do as instructed - school's closed, stay at home, school's open, make your way in.
Kids may live close to school, the vast majority of teachers do not. What happens when 800+ kids turn up on time, but only 7 teachers make it in on time?? It just doesn't work! Oh...and guess what....teachers are human too. Some of them even have their own children! What do they do for childcare when they have to leave the house at 5am to try to get in on time and not get home until 7pm or later???
About time some people took off their blinkers and see the whole picture, not just thinking about themselves for once!!!
I don't have kids. 0/10. Must try harder.0 -
You can't expect teachers to be able to get their 15-year-old second-hand cars started in weather like this.0

If you are an A Level student you should be fully capable of studying outside of the classroom, I would also imagine all of your teachers/tutors are available via e-mail to discuss what you need to be studying.0 -

Good point, and well made.0 -
As a former teenager, can I just say I bloody loved it when the teachers couldn't make it in when it snowed and I got a day off to play computer games and raid the fridge"A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

So if you are not a parent, what exactly is your problem with school closures?!0 -

You don't fail A levels because of a couple of days of snow. I smell a scapegoat.0 -
As a teacher I've got no say if the school is open or not. Yes it was closed today for most probably H and S. Also you've got to think about it, would half of the kids actually turned up? Not in my school they wouldn't have.
Its not about teachers being lazy etc, its about H and S. In a world of suing anyone for anything the head teacher/principles/governors have got to seriously think about is it actually safe for pupils, teachers and support staff to be in school, can they get to school safely and also can the above get home safely?
If you think teachers are lazy then think again.

No, I'm not a Teacher.0 -
My lads college told us they would be closed the night before it actually stared to snow.
You could argue that they were giving parents notice to organise for the next day...........but at the time the text was sent there was no snow on the ground at all.0 -
There was a bloke on the radio who made me laugh today. He pointed out that the same parents who would be only too happy to sue a school for an accident on the school premises are probably the same parents who let their kids out on a weekend drinking large quantities of alcohol and then filling up the A&E departments and keeping Mr Plod busy. Obviously a very big generalisation going on there, but I think it does reflect some of the double standards of the more dubious areas of our culture.0

Local authorities make the decision to shut schools. Not teachers...
At my kids' school, all the teachers and most of the pupils would have been able to make it in on yesterday when we were told it was shut, so due to pressure they decided to open today...0 -
There are an awful lot of 'new' faces in this thread with post counts under 10.
Things that make you go 'hmmmmnnnnnn'.0 -
I'm not who you think, but yes I've been on for some time.0

Okay, what would you like to fight about now then?0 -

My reply was about getting into work in the snow with respect to schools and their staff.
I don't want to fight about anything else, just wondering about your thoughts! Thats all.0 -

My thoughts have already been mentioned by others.
However, my Grandpa informed me the other day that the local council had not cleared the paths and roads due to political correctness. He was not joking.0 -
I,me sure he's not joking, but for us that are of a working age and are able bodied why should'nt we try to get into work?0

Captain Fagor wrote:Maybe someone could give some training to teachers on how to get off their lazy arses and get to their bloody jobs. I don't think schools close due to the dangers faced by kids getting to school - it's the public sector mentality of school teachers that's the root of the problem.
Professionals? Don't make me laugh.
 you've been colouring the pictures in the Daily Mail again haven't you
The school at which I govern is closed because we have no way of making the playgrounds and paths safe and we are responsible for the childrens, and staff, welfare when on site. trips slips and falls if due to 'negligence' can leave us legally liable and potentially facing prosecution.
but more importantly is the human cost of slips or falls, these are kids that I know and put a lot of free time and effort in to help and support - I have no wish to deliberately and knowingly place them in danger and have to face up to the parents and tell them it's my fault that their child is in pain and plaster. If that means know nothing idiots like you are going to criticise me and the school staff then go for it.
some of the teachers have been walking several miles in from pennine villages under two feet of snow in case the place was safe to open.0
