Turbo training / winter base training

Hi, as I suspect most of you are finding, this winter sucks in terms of getting out on the road so I'm finding myself on the indoor trainer pretty much most of the time. I can barely remember the last time I had a decent road ride that didn't involve flooded roads or ice.

Anyway I'm aware at this time of year base building is the name of the game and I was curious how others are going about this when using their indoor trainers for the majority of their training time. Are people just repeatedly slogging out longer 1 - 2+ hour high cadence low HR type sessions or are you mixing it up with other types of training? I was considering getting the Sufferfest training session, but was concerned that this might be too full on during the base training phase?

Ultimately I'm training for TT's and possibly triathlons rather than sportives etc - although I guess I should still be going through a base training phase before training on specifics a bit further down the line.

I'm only doing L3/L4 rides on the turbo at the minute - maximum around 1hr + warmup. Can't see the point of doing L2 rides on it - way too boring.

Have managed to get out on the road bike or mtb during the cold snap for longer rides (although I did manage to fall on my Assos yesterday, so serves me right). Haven't had it too bad around here though compared to other parts of the UK.
  • Done my first "long" session at endurance pace yesterday, 2 hours. Jesus Christ, by the end I wanted to top myself.

The gym at the Uni reopens this week so i can start hitting the weights again, so not going to bother with endurance rides till the snow has cleared.
