Does anyone actually ride more in winter than summer?

In most of the training manuals that I've read it seems that they recommend doing longer hours in winter to build the base, with the summer then spent doing quality rather than quantity.

Yet looking at the 2009 stats thread it seems the vast majority (including myself) do considerably more riding in summer than winter.

Obviously the weather plays a huge part in this but is it a big deal?

    Me!

Last Dec-Feb I did 205 hours of riding.
Last May-Jul I did 105 hours of riding.

So yes, I do a lot more in the winter than in the summer. I couldn't possibly sustain the intensity of training I do in the summer (along with the racing too) for the same volume of training I do in the winter. I do have the advantage of being able to train more or less whenever I like, so if I need/want to fit in more volume I do........ which is obviously not the situation for the vast majority of people.

    Me too!

Winter (Nov- Jan) is between 16 - 25C, Summer (June - August) is 38 - 50C, so no real contest!

Spring and Autumn are larger temperature ranges, but still generally pleasant in early mornings & evenings. Just have to avoid the mid-day highs...
  • Yes for some reason I do ride more usually in the winter -- other stuff get in the way in the summer. I say Usually -- because I haven't been out on the bike for 3 weeks because of the weather. (snow)

If I don't get some miles in soon I think I am going to struggle to do well in the sportives I have entered in March.
