I guess we've got Southern Softie weather, dry and no snow around the Surrey Hills but fecking cold of course. Hard to get the layers right so as not to overheat when working whilst staying warm when descending or going slow. An icy Ranmore Common Road saw me go down slower than the chap coming up it the other way. An hour feels about right, the second hour is harder work.

Managed only 3 outings over the xmas break. New years day was quite interesting. We'd just had a light dusting of snow, but I ended up going too far east where it seems they'd had a couple of inches, and on lanes which never see a gritting lorry. Sometimes I was on undisturbed snow, which packed the space between tyres and guards resulting firstly in a bow-wave effect which coated my feet / shins liberally in snow, then secondly caused a drag factor equivalent to a 20% hill into a headwind. Had to stop 4 times to unclog the mudguards, and was seriously considering taking them off. At other times I was on snow which had been packed down to a glassy smoothness by cars; interesting on the straight / flat but terrifying on bends and hills. 20 miles took me 2 hours, by which time most of the snow on my shoes had melted into my socks and I couldn't feel my toes. Then they started to thaw out and I wished I couldn't feel them. To take my mind off the pain I went to wash down the bike. 10 mins to thaw out the hosepipe, 10 mins to wash the packed ice out of every nook and cranny, 10 mins to dry and lube it.

Time well spent though; was in perfect order when I went out again yesterday. Decided to go for just an hour, and do some hills. No fresh snow, but the second hill again hadn't been visited by the gritters. This time it was rutted black ice. Very cautious progress going up; even more so going down the other side. Got the layers right though, and feet stayed warm and dry.

    Bracing stuff!

I have no fear of cycling in cold, just will not go out if icy so not been out for days!!
Sunny dry and cold is fine but last few days here foggy and icy and lanes with ice on.
Guess I will have to dust off the turbo and get into my shed!!
May get a cheap second hand MTB and get my dog to pull me round somke fields :D

Managed first outing today since New Years Eve. From Lisburn up the White mtn (over 700 ft) to Stonyford then along to Glenavy and back again, all main roads wet but absolutely fine. Glorious sunny weather, albeit VERY cold. Lots of 'side' roads still covered in lots of snow and frost. New Sealskinz socks I got from work actually kept my feet warm as well :o Bike was stinking when I got back in! So long as we don't get another dump of snow tonight I'll be back out tomorrow.
