then I have a small PC in a cupboard next to the flat screen when I want to watch iplayer or sky sports on some what dubious internet sites

    Ah Freeview!

Welcome to the world of picture blocking and complete loss of signal when the wind blows and it rains hard. Not to mention channels which mysteriously disappear without warning.

my sky doesnt work when it RAINS !!!!

never had a problem with freeview, but I have a chuffing bug ariel and can see emly hook mast from my roof
  • I've got VirginMedia with tons of channels...Mathematically, the more channels you buy is inversely proportional to how many you actually watch.

That looks a nice box, will check it out in the New Year sales

  • You could have gone down the freesat route and used the satellite dish that you already have. Then you could have had iplayer through your set top box and free high def to boot

Could you elaborate a bit on that? My sister has Sky only because her aerial reception is so poor she cannot get any Freeview (or much terrestrial before it was turned off). Could she convert to Freesat and stop her Sky contract? (I appreciate I could google all this myself - but a brief overview would be very helpful)

Yes, you can stop the Sky contract as long as you have fulfilled the minimum period. You the buy a Freesat box (I have 2 Humax ones, 1 records and needs a 2nd cable for the 2nd receiver, the other is just a straight receiver). It's as simple as taking the coax out of the Sky box, plugging it into the Freesat box and retuning.
Upgrading the Sky sat dish to have extra cables is also very simple, you can buy a quad LNB and some cable (off Amazon IIRC) for about £20 and run up to 4 cables to other parts of the house, of course you will need a Freesat box for each room

How long will it be before all TV is streamed through the internet?

Yeah, but all the good shows are on Sky 1. Until they find a way to get around that with Freeview, I'll stick with Sky.

If you count the BBC iPlayer then it sort of is. The BBC are currently trialing iPlayer over Freesat, the Humax boxes have an Ethernet connection that will allow iPlayer to be watched on your TV (via an internet connection and not satellite). The trial is likely to be widened as early as next week to Humax owners.

    Not live I agree.

    Clearly, you've never seen Fringe!

Sky might MAKE crap programmes, but they buy good ones from America too :)

    Are they??????????? where.

I've just upped from bog standard freeview to Tiscali+ and have the benefit of Sky 1,2,3 now, utter drivel to date. Re-runs of Futurama excepted (the show The Simpsons could have been  )

I've only got the 4 terrestrial TV channels.

Just wondering, does anyone with digital, satellite or whatever feel that I'm missing out? I've never really seen anything that would tempt me to get satellite, although digital is a possibility.

Not quite the same as watching it in glorious colour &/or HD on a huge screen though, even if you do pipe your PC into your TV. It's never quite same. I hate watching TV through my laptop..it's rubbish.

When they switch off the terrestrial broadcast in your area, you'll need to get a digital box in any case, which will get all the freeview channels whether you like it or not. They switched us off a couple of months ago (Cornwall). The only thing I particularly liked about it was that my reception got a lot better. The extra channels are generally unimpressive, but I've got used to watching TV more via iPlayer when it suits me.
