Hi, I was looking around the net last night for some good advice on a CORE workout designed for cyclists and came across...

www.cyclo-core.com

...which sounds pretty good, and the few reviews I can find appeared to think it was good. I'm in desperate need of getting myself into shape, I worked out a basic CORE session for myself and tried it this morning - couldn't even hold the 'plank' for very long!!

My only reservation on this is that it appears to be a few years old (all the reviews I've found were 2004 ish), but that's not to say it isn't worth spending the money on. Also, somewhat amazingly, a search on eBay in the UK and USA show's no one selling it!! So either no one has brought it, or those that have think it's so good that they're not going to sell it!!

If anyone has tried it, some feedback would be good - or failing that, some recommendations on CYCLING SPECIFIC core workout DVD's.

Cheers

  • These workouts look, in my opinion, no different from attending a normal Pilates or Yoga style class. I've watched the free stuff on the net and would definately say that these courses are no different to the Pilates/Stability Ball sessions I go to at my gym.

Holding the plank for any length of time takes training of the core muscles and needs to be built up over time so I wouldn't expect to hold it for long unless you had a strong core in the first place. Keep going, its taken me over a year to hold it for 3 minutes easily!

In essence any Pilates DVD would be suitable as it is all about core stability.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers CJ,

Have decided for now to work out my own routine (brought a gym ball a couple of years back but have never used it!!) as I've spent enough time in gyms etc in the past!! Will get myself going and then probably book in with a local Personal Trainer and get him to give me a decent 30 minute core workout that I can do at home.

Planning on doing three sessions a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) in the morning before breakfast.

That, some weight loss and actually getting out on my bike for a change should hopefully set me up well for 2010 :-)

I'm a big believer in working the core, its an area that cycling performance depends on but doesn't work.

I use a Bosu and Swiss ball, with various exercises that are easy and beneficial.
The session takes between 30 and 60 mins, and is a nice change to turbo/wts.
As long as you are committed and sensible, there are some great improvements to be made in your back, abs, obiques, hips, quads and glutes.

Cheers rock_hopper - that looks great, and the routine they show is from the guy at Cycle-CORE anyway :-)

  • When starting core work you really need someone to supervise you, to make sure you're doing it right. The issue with doing core without supervision is that it is very easy to cheat.
