Alright,

My first bike build so it'll take me a while, got plenty researching to do and deciding on what parts to go for but so far i've got:
418.jpg

2010 Cove Stiffee Frame 19.5" in Matt Black:
419.jpg
420.jpg

Mavic 823 Tubeless Rims and Hope Pro 2 hubs:
428-1.jpg
430-1.jpg

Hope M4 with Braided hoses - 203mm front 183mm back:
438.jpg

Building it as a bit of an all-rounder. I enter All-mountain/XC events and I usually race on my other bike which is a Specialized Enduro 09. Would love to be able to do some of them on this bike so i'm trying to keep it as light as possible but still bomb proof so I can hit free ride tracks and dirt jumps.

    very nice.
what type of drivetrain are you going for?

Not sure yet, I'm wanting to run a bash guard/chain stay so I was looking at maybe going for a dual ring/bash setup and a 10 gear on the back.
Not sure what ratios to go for or what will work best so I really need to look into it and find out what will work!

    Any suggestions?

I've read on another thread that by having a 36t middle ring you only lose one actual different gear combo than having a 22/32/44 triple set-up.
    so 22/36

i would run 9 on the back with a saint rearmech(medium cage)

    dual pull front mech

I dont want to spend silly money, even though I feel I have been so far.... but I want to have a finished bike that is bombproof and still light! Not really set myself a budget, just spending the money and i'll cry about it later.

I'm going to build the rest of it over a couple of pay days so i'm wanting to take advantage of the CRC 10% off that finishes tomorrow night and get a decent order put in there!

    Cheers for the help Jay.

Forks wise i'm gonna go with Fox, i've got a set of Floats on my specialized enduro and i love them. Not decided what i'm going to go for yet but i'll be buying them at a later date.

I was liking the Shimano Saint Rear mech med cage but is it going to work ok with a 22/36t setup? It says about some mode coverter which does 23-28T for DH and 32-34T for AM on the small cog
Do you think its a better idea to go for the XT rear mech and the SLX front?
Just worried by what it is saying that I wont be able to get the saint rear mech setup right with a 22/36T front setup.

Bar and stem wise i've never picked or specified what I enjoy riding, my specialized is straight out the shop and it rides great! Same with all the other bikes i've had.
Whats the benefit of having a larger rise in my bars? 20mm or 40mm ?

    Cheers.
  • jay12
    jay12 Posts: 6,306
it wiil be fine. they are reffering to the sprockets on the cassette

larger rise will mean you r sat higher up and you hands are higher above the front end so you will have more control on the descents, jumps etc.
what rise have you got on your current bike and how long is your stem?
  • AGray
    AGray Posts: 49
    Handlebars:
Specialized Enduro mid rise bar, 2014 alloy, 31.8mm, 6 degree up, 9 degree backsweep, 660mm wide
    Stem:
Specialized adjustable rise, 31.8mm clamp, 3D forged with CNC finish

I'll have a look into it, cheers man!

See for the rear casette, go for a 11-34 tooth?
  • jay12
    jay12 Posts: 6,306
what is the length of the stem? if it dosn't state on the website measure from hole to hole.
do you feel comfotable with the h/bars and stem, any problems with them?

yeah i would, 11-34 would mean you could climb on the bike as well

I'm at work on a 12 hour nightshift just now so i'll have to measure when I get home, But aye its pretty short and its great! Bike is responsive and the feedback is great.

I might leave the stem and bars til i figure out exactly what I need.

Would be good to get everything else ordered up and use the 10% discount.

So aye so far i'm looking at getting:

Shimano Saint Shifter Pods M810 F&R
Shimano Saint Front Mech Dual Pull
Shimano Saint Rear Mech Medium Cage
Shimano SLX Chainset Double M665 or go for an E-13 setup?
Shimano Saint/SLX Cassette 9 speed HG80 - what is the HG80 part, do you match that to the HG on the chain?? Going for a 11-34
    Shimano HG93 Chain 9 speed

ditching the shimano chain for a SRAM PC951 as they have the hotlink for swapping out links if they snap.
  • jay12
    jay12 Posts: 6,306
then a short stem is what you need.

with the casset the HG80 part is just the model, you can have any chain as long as it's for a 9 speed cassete. i would just get the SLX double chainset, less hassel and it's great too. and good choice on the sram chain, they are really good

and if you want to know that the SLX chainset comes with a bottom bracket with it already so you can install it straight away but you also need to take the frame to your LBS to see if it needs facing. and i would also buy the headset now so that you can have it fitted at the LBS until you have enough money for the rest of the parts unless you have a headset fitting tool

See how you were saying about finding out if the bike needs facing before fitting the bottom bracket?
Why would it need faced and what do they face? Just curious as I wound in the bottom bracket as far as I could by hand the other day.
The threads seem fine. Just waiting to borrow a shimano tool off of a mate to wind it right in and tighten it up.

Also... i've ordered Fox TALAS 36 2010 forks
Going to order stem, bars, tyres and seat soon :)

i thought you were dead or something  nice to hear from you again.

regarding the the BB facing. the place where the BB sits sometimes can get paint on or the surface is uneven. the LBS uses a special tool(which can cost about £600) which makes sure that the surface is even for the BB to fit on. sometimes you cannot see if it needs facing so just take the frame to your LBS and he will check if it needs facing as it's better to be safe than sorry. if the frame is not faced then the bearings get worn out at a very fast rate. this job dosn't cost much so you'r saving money to face it.

what bars, stem and seat are you getting?

Cool i'll take it down LBS and see what they say!

If this isnt a silly money build I dont know what is!
Hope M4's, Cove Stiffee Frame, shimano saint, slx,xt and amazing rims,hubs/wheel build.
Forks are the most important part of the bike, cant wait to get the TALAS on! :D
I think they are a good investment as i've got a Specialized Enduro that i'd love to use the TALAS on, would be nice to be able to wind the front end down on it!

I'm getting the bars and stem you suggested:
the 40mm Truvativ Hussefelt Stem with 31.8mm clamp
and Truvativ Hussefelt Riser Bars in Blast Black 680mm 40mm Rise 31.8mm

Not got a clue what seat to get:
    was lookin at: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=8880

And tyres: maybe Maxxis High Roller DH LUST 26 x 2.35 Folding 62a
and i'll need to find some tubeless sealant im guessing

you dont need a headset tool. just use a block of scrap wood and a lump hammer. The Slx cranks sound good. I have seen them before and the looks the nuts.

That seat look good aye but I really dont know what kind of seat I want to get.
I wear padded shorts but still get a sore arse on longer journeys. Wouldnt mind something with a bit of padding.
Might just order the other parts and buy a seat from the LBS as i'll be able to feel how soft and decent it is in person.

Headset tool: wasnt sure if u needed it or not, i've pressed wheel bearings into my caliper carriers on my car before so I should be alright doing the headset. I might give it a bash or might just get it done when i'm down the bike shop finding out if the bb needs faced.

SLX cranks look amazing, build quality looks superb. Just need to get it all put together and see how it rides!
