Bikefood Hemp Protein

My consignment from bikefood arrived and I love the bars. Taste great and not overly chewy and my body seems to treat the natural ingredients better than the usual powerbar/rideshot combo.

However the Hemp protein powder is hard to stomach. Only available in raw it seems to taint all the food I mix it into. Cereal turns into a grey mushy goo and not appetising. I even mixed it into a stew last night with lots of spices and I could still detect it.

Don't get me wrong I don't feel bloated after having it like Maximuscle et al its just that flavour.

Any ideas?

Hemp protein?? Hemp's what ropes were made of before synthetics were developed. Sounds disgusting. Bin it.

What's wrong with milk / chicken / eggs / pulses / fish etc as sources of protein?
  • hemp protein, is it april 1st?
are you sure you didnt buy it from pet shop/ garden centre?

Agree with keef66, I got some free sachets of the Bikefood orange flavoured training / recovery mix at a race this year. I thought it was disgusting.
Never tried hemp protein, but why not get some unflavoured whey powder? That's fairly tasteless and a lot cheaper. I mix it into porridge in the morning, and it's fine. If you're making a stew though put some proper protein in it, like meat, or Tofu if you're vegetarian. I don't get it!
  • Hello all

Really glad you like our bars which we think are the healthiest and best tasting on the market.

Hemp is indeed a very versatile product, with many practical uses for every part of the plant and it's seeds. Clothing, rope, paper, healthy oils and even fuel can all be made from this amazing plant. We were so impressed with the nutritional profile and environmental credentials of the hemp seed, we decided to make it part of our range of products.

Here's a link to the wikipedia page on hemp, which we all found very interesting:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp

The first time we tried it here, we thought it had a rather nutty, or 'earthy' taste, which is probably not surprising considering the powder is made from 100% hemp seed. We have found it most palatable when mixed with apple juice, or fruit smoothies, or as suggested on the tub, with our Bikefood Energy Drink Mix for that matter!!!

There was a recent article in Cycling Weekly about hemp protein, which we have posted on our website - please feel free to click the following link and have a read.

I used to eat hemp seeds all the time and they were amazing, so this sounds like it might be quite nice - i'll get some in.

"I used to eat hemp seeds all the time and they were amazing"

Are you sure you weren't growing them first then smoking it? :) It may be a decent source of protein, but it's expensive - £24 for 1.2kg, whereas I currently get 10lbs (4.54kg) of whey protein for £31.75. To be fair, I've eaten hemp seeds before and quite liked the taste but I'm not sure how it would mix with fruit or yoghurt, that sounds a bit wrong. I'd try it, but it would have to be much cheaper.

Just bought a tub via the Devon supplier...agree with all that sympo says ordered protein powder instead which is great either with water or milk hardly any taste no crappy sugar and other hidden nastys (SIS rego???) shame really as the hemp idea is great.
Anyone in Cornwall want a tub???

    I suggest two factors:

    1. You pay more for quality (perceived or real). Good stuff isn't cheap and good uncommon stuff is never going to be cheap.

    2. You pay more for smaller/specialised suppliers. I'm sure Bikefood don't have the turnover of the typical bulk sales sources. Also, whey protein is an established product while hemp, like other raw foods, has been a bit of a 'secret'.

You can get supermarket energy/snack bars for 30p-40p each, Snickers are about 50p. Yet there are plenty of sports bar firms selling theirs at £1.20 or more. Everyone is free to choose. But I'm afraid I won't be trying Bikefood's bars, not at £5 for 3 bars (inc p&p). That's £1.67 each.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.
  • Are we to expect a rush of amateur athletes being cuaght doping with levels of TBh(or whatever the 'active' component in hemp is?
Its at best for making rope or feeding pet pigeons get some milk & eggs instead?
  • Ive bought the Linwoods hemp that was featured in the cycling weekly article (quite expensive £5.79 from Holland & Barrett) and tried it for the first time tonight in a stew (venison and red wine), I don't think it added anything to the flavour, I couldn't taste it anyway so fine for stews/soups but I don't think I will be adding it to porridge or anything like that.

You're kidding right - that stuff tastes like lamb formula - which is the most vomit inducing substance ever!
