Gold Bike Bling - Too Chav?

I have a few gold blingy bits on my bike, such as QR skewers, seat clamp and headset spacers. I'm in the market for a new stem soon too and I like the look of the Hope stems in, you guessed it, gold!

In hindsight, I may have picked a different colour for my bling bits, such as red, but I DO like the gold and it goes with some other bits I have, such as brown saddle and bar grips (kinda!).

So, is gold just too chav looking on a bike?! Opinions? :?

i don't thinks so. as long as you don't go too wild and have gold frame, gold wheels, gold handlebars etc.

gold stem is too much in my opinion but i had lots of gold on my bionicon which had a black and gold frame:

  • As per jay12. Less is more. My tourer is gold I left all the fitting kit (Hope GripDrs aside) black as it sets the gold of nicely.

  • i like gold bling, stick with it.
  • gold stem is too much in my opinion

Think you could be right. The gold bits I have are fairly subtle, as are the bits on your Bionicon, but a stem may just be a bit TOO much.

  • Judging by some of the "blinged" up bikes I read about on here I reckon Burberry should start making bits for bikes, they'd do a bomb! I reckon gold is just a small step down from Burberry check - IMO.

  • I really like the gold hope stuff but adding the stem to what you have will be like adding a rappers VW badge on to a supermodel with a low cut dress - it'll just take everyones attention of what they should be looking at!

I've a black and white Scott Genius highlighted with gold and I think the biggest gold items I would consider is hubs because they give a lift to the wheels without being ott - the bioncon above is a good example. If you want to cheer it up then ditch the brown and swop for white - a white saddle and white grips with gold bolt ons would look great - oh and the black hope stems have a light gold logo etched into them anyway. To finish it off you can always add Truvativ Noir Carbon Bars which have gold lettering and look cool 8)

  • My scott has some small gold bits. I'd never put a coloured stem on though, black white or silver only please!

Chainrings look a bit naff too.

Nipples, spokes, rims, hubs, all bolts, jockey wheels, fork adjusters, headset (if contrasting the frame+forks) qr and seatclamps, all fair game though!

Gold now has increased in value so much getting anything gold plated will cost you a fortune ..

  • Gold Only looks good agaist black, or very dark colours.at a push red. Might look alright on a purple bike also. Not my cup of tea though. Someone suggested it on a white bike the other day, would look awful! A bit like those lexus drivers who go for the gold badge option on there White cars!

I have some yellow metal bits on my predominantly white bike, but only to accent the the black bits, having brass spoke nipples on black rims with black spokes set the theme.

Gold on black looks nice in a retro kind of way, if done tastefully.
Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

Personally I think the gold stem might be too much, The gold bits and bobs you have already will compliment it quite nice, but a big lump of gold for a stem will look odd.

Got any pics of the bike? what about cockpit? How about some hope gold bar end plugs and possibly a gold head doctor? that will give you some gold in the stem area without going over the top.

Yep, reckon you could be right there fella. I think the gold Hope head doctor may just do the trick, with just a plan black stem on the shopping list now. There is probably a danger in going OTT with these things (see some of the images above!) so less is maybe more.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
