Mark Cavendish's power output

Have a guess at Cav's power output when he's sprinting. Post your estimate on here.
I'll come back later on and tell you who's closest. The numbers will make you go

Hoy claims to whack out 2,300, so i would say 1800
p.s 2,300 is ridiculous by the wayUp hup hup hup.....fricking hate that!0 -
I read somewhere that his power output is actually a bit lower than your average elite sprinter but he is very aerodynamic compared to the rest of them. Maybe 1400-1500 Watts?Le Blaireau (1)0

In an article in cycling plus / cycle sport a while ago Bennati said his highest ever power output in a sprint was 1750ish so ill guess at 1650-17500

I'm guessing about 1600.0

i have a feeling its not high, (comparatively I mean!) 1100w0

I'm told it's around 1250W for 20 seconds, sometimes close to 1350W for 5 seconds. Now I'm not looking at a certified copy of the SRM file, it's only what I've been told by a team member. Make of it all what you will.
Either way the number is presumably a long way below the figure generated by Greipel, Bennati or Hushovd, Cav's strength is his very low position, his chin is practically on the stem. I wonder if any sprinters will be re-working their position this winter?[/code]0 -
One of the reasons he almost got booted from the academy wasn't it, he didn't hit the big numbers?
I think Herety saved his skin, telling them the boy was a winner (good call!)"A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

They should be! I remember JV saying, in a Competitor Radio interview, that they were testing sprinters in the wind tunnel.
Either through tactics, or improvements like working on their position, I suspect Mr Cavendish's rivals will make it harder for him next season. He'll still win tons of races though!Le Blaireau (1)0 -
So are Cavs number relatively low because of the position he uses, or has he developed his position because he can't put out quite as big numbers as some?
I mean, would he be getting bigger numbers if he sprinted in the same style as Hushovd et al?0 -
I suspect that his power to weight is better than most hence the top kick. If so I guess one way to beat him would be to try and take it from further out, I'm thinking Petacchi/Chippo style.
Can anyone remember what sucess Petacchi has had against Cav the times they've raced each other?0 -

Pretty much. He's more aerodynamic (apparently) which means he has to put down less power for the same speed."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

A long sprint won't disturb Cavendish, his aero ways mean others will suffer whilst his more efficient ways means he can hit a higher top end. Weight-wise, he's not that light.
Note that Cav has won some uphill sprints too, in the Tour de Suisse for example. Here, aerodynamics become less important compared to power. And he has an excellent team. So his position is an advantage but his talent is still there.0 -
Another thing about Cav is he knows whos wheel to stick to. Knowing how to race can make up for a great deal in physical talent."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

I have hit some numbers some have quoted so I will go way higher
I heard him quote once he held 1700w for last 5km of a stage so would guess his max would be 2kw but prob at end of stage about 1850W0 -

They tried this and failled, why do you think he is the only one left on his train? He can sustain a very high power output for a good distance, this is why he is also very good on the track.
He has a high output, good power to weight ratio and is very low on the bike sprinting, look at paris finnish this year, add them all up=no1 sprinter.0 -
Changed my mond, max 2.1kw0

1700 W for 5 km? Really?Le Blaireau (1)0 -
1250w are you sure? How much does Cav weigh?? I've gone past that and i'm by no means a power house... :shock:0
