OK due to Monkey Monster insisting that I sup upon his fine pint of beer/ale I am now fascinated by the stuff.

On Saturday I had some. Sunday I some more, Wandle something. Yesterday I had four/five pints of Abbot and today with my girlfriend gone with mates to some 'secret restaurant in my kitchen'. I might have a jar or two.

It's lovely. My favourite so far is banana bread. Followed by Abbot as I like its smooth delivery of alcohol wonders...

Any recommendations on beers would be much appreciated... or just post your appreciate/disgust for the stuff.

Adnams - any of their beers are superb, heartily recomended. They are especially good if you can get up to their home town of Southwold, a ride along the Suffolk coast followed by a cold pint of Broadside makes for a fantastic Sunday

London Shame! In theory a nice pint, but I've had some rotten examples over the years. I grew up on Sam Smiths, they have a few pubs in London, worth checking out for the prices alone. Also, not exactly ale but Belgian trappist beers open up a whole new world of drinking pleasure - I'm thinking Westmalle, Grimberg, De Koninck, Palm, Chimay, Leffe etc. I could go on, in fact I went through the entire beer menu on a couple of occasions - happy days!

It sounds cheesy but I love the whole image of sitting in a pub, in my suitm, legs crossed reading a paper while clutching at a beer as it rests on the table.

I also like going to the weatherspoons in Wimbledon and sitting with the locals outside and rolling rollies while I drink my pint like a hobo.

As my girlfriend rushed to give me my pint and I didn't drink it immediately she asked if there was something wrong. I told her 'knowingly' that it needs to rest - it was still settling - an old lady, a pub regular, looked at me and smiled. I felt special...

DDD there's a newish pub in Pimlico called the Cask. The landlord is nuts about proper brtitish beer and the selection changes every week. I was in their last night and tried 3 different beers, non of which I'd ever had before. It's well worth a visit.

    So last night's beers:

    Crouch Vale - Wild Hop

    Greene King Fireside

    Dark Star Hophead

Sadly there aren't that many Lonodn pubs that have a good selection of Ale.

Current favourites that are quite easy to find are:

    Deuchars - IPA
    Sharp's - Doombar
    St Austell - Tribute
    Gales - Seafarers Ale

And rather aptly Surrey Hills Brewery - Shere Drop.

    Mmmmmmmmmm BEER.

    Thanks Jash,

It's have to be a pretty special beer to get me off banana bread... mmmmmmm

Ok slightly controversial, but I find that when choosing beer I always go for british ones... don't know why, feels like honoring a tradition/culture thing.

  • I'm rather partial to a pint of Spitfire or Late Red - lots available in fabulous pubs in the Kent Hills. Amazingly motivating for getting to the pub. Just rather less motivating for the getting home bit.

My old man is good mates with one of the Neame family so there's often a decent about of their stuff round his palce. Spitfire is lovely stuff, although I'm rather partial to a snifter of Bishop's Finger...

The yanks actually make some very good IPA's these days. But I tend to go British, purely because there are so many breweries in the UK these days you can never get bored. That's one of the great things about bitter/ale - walk into any pub in the UK and the chances are you'll see Fosters/Stella/Carling but you might well find a bitter you've never tried...

  • Ahhhhhhhh Innis and Gunn... I'd forgotten that existed...

I tried some fab ones at the ale festival, a favourite was called Amarillo, and Smiley Moose, oh and a spiced christmas cider. I can't remember their names though...

I also like spitfire, but prefer it out of bottles. Mmmm fizzy :P

Why would you go to a pub to order a warm beverage?

Some ales after they've been in a cold fridge for two days? Fine, provided they're drunk quickly and not given the opportunity to warm up. Otherwise, ale is rancid stuff. Yack!

Because the real ales are undergoing a second fermentation in the bottle/cask and as such need to be at a suitable temperature to let the yeast grow. Too cold and they don't do much.
