Following tri-sexual's advice I've just spoken to my instructor about it, and he tells me that the red light was on the other (closed) lane, and mine was green. He wasn't aware that I thought I'd gone through a red

So now its driving without due care and attention, kidding honestly

Yeah, but it wasn't my fault - I was drunk.

What happened is that the traffic lights are done so that the left one can be green while the right one is red, but if the one on the left is red, the one on the right also has to be red (hope you're following all this).

As you come down towards them, the left hand side light comes into view first, so obviously people keep an eye on that one so that if it turns red you will spot it earlier. As I drove down, I had my eye on the left one, so that as it turned amber, the view of the traffic lights on the right were still obscured, so I prepared to brake. My instructor didn't realise what I was doing, because his attention was by now distracted by the BMW, so he didn't tell me that the normal traffic light sequencing wasn't functional and the left hand lights changed to red a full 30 seconds before the right ones, so that I was OK to carry on.

Hmmm, I really haven't got a knack for describing situations, sorry I couldn't make it any clearer. I'd make a terrible novelist.
