Have you succumbed yet?

By putting the heating on? Tried to resist as much as possible and have so far not resorted to using the central heating but am using a convection heater in the bedroom before I go to bed for 2 hours so the bedroom is toasty, the living room has the cooker, TV and PC on the go so the warmth comes from these appliances.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Good grief Redvee - heating has been on up here for at least a month (for some it was on all summer!)

  • No, we just put more clothes on.

Isn't ideal after a day in the saddle, freezing cold and dripping wet coming into a house where you can pretty much see your breath.

My heating's been on since mid summer.
  • soft female housemate has already had us put it on, kicked up a huge fuss when one of the other guys turned it off again!
  • Dear God the heating has been on for an age.

It helps that the heating bill is included in the rent as the heating in centralised in my building Soviet style.

    Its toasty.

No heating here. The heating never goes on in my room, I just put on an extra jumper if I'm cold.
  • I was thinking of putting up a thread asking what temperature people set their rheostats to. My heating has only come on a few times and it's only over the last 2 days that I haven't got up and turned it down a notch. All in all I've used the heating for about 5 hours in total so far. But the utilities people are now out to get me.

Of course, bear in mind that I live in London with all the other softies and London has its own microclimate.

They put it on. I put it off.

They open doors. I close them.

They leave the lights on. I turn them off.

They buy the food. I throw it out uneaten.

They empty the bank account. I fill it up.

Oh the happy life of a family man!! :(

We've had it on for short sessions for a while (actually quite a mild autumn round here though) but the first frost in the back garden to persist all day (yesterday) has persuaded me to set it on the timer.

I just have it on for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night, which it's being doing during the summer as well. For the hot water and also to avoid the false economy, whenever I have switched the central heating off in the past. The central heating pump has siezed, so what I saved on gas - went on a new pump...
  • im the only one who knows how to turn it on and off... :P

its on atm, only cause tonights going to be cold. my pc kicks out lots of heat anyway, student leaving eh.

Yep its on and I find myself turning into my dad with cries of "close the doors" etc to the kids.
  • We don't really have heating as such. But the bedroom window has been moved to the closed position - and one of our 2 electric radiators has been getting some use.

Apparently it was -8 yesterday in Braemar.

Finally switched it on only to find the new pump we had fitted in May had stopped working! Been fixed now but officially should be turned off as, unsurprisingly, the 30 year old heating system doesn't meet the latest requirements on ventilation. Hopefully going to have it replaced with a nice new condensing boiler.

I've had it on a couple of times since Nov 9th, just for a couple of hours to take the chill off. I must be getting soft in my dotage as I'm starting to feel the cold...

Ours has been on for an hour in the morning, and a couple of hours in the evening for the last couple of weeks. Jnr and I are fine, but the OH seems to suffer from poor circulation and is always cold. I think I'd got as much mileage as I could out of "put a jumper on", "shut the doors".........

E-on probably don't like me much. I pay monthly DD, set amount. The last bill said they I was £180 in credit, but it was against an estimated gas reading. I checked, and they'd massively over estimated, so I'm now about £400 in credit. I have hardly anything to pay now each month until April when they reset the accounts.

I think someone asked what you should have your thermostat set to earlier...... it depends on where the thermostat is, and how warm blooded you are. When things like this are calculated they use 18C as the demand temperature in the majority of the house, and 21C in the living room. I set my themostat to 18C, which is in the hall, and the house is too warm. So we now set to 16C and it seems about right.
  • I have a no coat before December rule.

I'm about to enter my 8th winter in this country. I have stuck to my rule zero times. Ok I haven't succumbed this winter yet ... but after tomorrow I will have succumbed!

    At least I'm consistent

Put it one yesterday for the 1st time! Set at about 16C. Was trying to see how long I could hold out but the indoor temp had dropped to about 14.5C without it and it was just feeling a little too nippy....

  • My wife and I have a running battle. She turns the thermostat up, then I turn it down. If she had her way the heating would only go off for July and August.

Funny how women are always cold. Wherever I have lived or worked it's always the women who want the heating turned up and the men who want it turned down.

Part of the problem in the workplace seems to be that women wear pretty thin, short sleeved tops with thin fabric and/or short skirts whereas men have to be trussed up in suits and ties....

Ooh, sounds good - I want to work where you do! Women in thin tops and cold temperatures are a good mix IMHO

Errrr, ours is on all year round. We set the thermostat to the temperature we want and it kind of looks after itself after that. Although admittedly the thermostat is set rather low.

But we did light our first wood fire on Sunday night. Lovely!

Put the central heating on tonight :( but only for 3 hours. Now got it on a timer for when I wake up and for as I'm leaving work so that the flat has some warmth to it when I get home, if I need it later in the evening then I can override the timer.

When I was in student halls in Leeds the bills were included in the rent so we left the heating on all winter. There's something very satisfying about walking around in your pants drinking a caiprinia and watching the snow flood down.
