Very nice El Cap'. That's a lot lighter than mine. Mind you, it's me that needs to lose the weight, then I'll worry about the bike. :D
    Happy trails.

And, just to prove I don't just wash, polish, pet and lavish vast amounts of money on this bike and do actually race it:

You have a nice collection of bikes, particularly the Ribble. I also like the road bike no. 6.

I got as far as putting the Recon cassette on the bike:

    DSC01936.jpg
Nice, light and as strong as French made gearbox… The chain ‘rattled’ quite badly and it was a very ‘snug’ fit on the freehub – snug enough for me to be concerned it would damage it if ridden and distance.

Special thanks needs to go to:
Andy – for his advice regarding rims/wheels.
Andy (from Clee Cycles) – for his expert advice on wheels.
The Crudcatcher Regulars – for the Crankset debate.
Xgreygoose – for the advice and help with the pedals.
Homer’s Double – for his advice on tyres.
    Nj3320 for the inspiration:

    Severe lack of Drillium.

that must be the next "up grade" a general does of Drillium.

I'm very tempted, and have done some minor Dremellium upgrades in the past however my prowess with power tools just isn't good enough to start with Drillium.

If you look at the 1st pic on page one, those blue SID's are currently in pieces awaiting a rebuild after being resprayed black, which incidently is exactly the same black that the rear end had been sprayed...

They can be built up at 1189g, with an empty right leg, or at 1348g with working rebound and compression. That said, they may be a tad heavier due to the thickness of the new paint.

Looking really good El Cap'. Woo, that's light. :-)
    Happy trails.
  • Is the working rebound and compression only used for adjustment, or are they intergral parts of the suspension?

Hope you understand what I mean. Will the fork still function perfectly without them and be nice to ride with, or will it just basically be a spring then?

    Love this build!

It's great to see older bikes still working as well as new XC machines!

btw, where did you get those custom name stickers? :D

I know exactly what you mean, at the 1189g build it's like riding a pogo stick...

Some one on Ebay was doing them. Can't remember the exact supplier.

Looks good, glad I could inspire :-)

Get yourself some alu bolts for the brake levers and shifters, and go for a double.

Be interested to know if the Recon cassette does work!

Why not take the MoCo out of your Reba if you were thinking of doing without the damping on the SIDs, you still keep rebound damping, and it saves c100g.
  • No worries. You are welcome. Glad to help you out. A nice build you have there. :)

Here's a few other places you could save some weight and not break the piggy bank. :) We're talking a few grams but they do all add up :)

You say you have Ti-bolts on your brake set. You could also get the adjustment spacer and washer in Titanium too. I got the for my XX brakes.

Also some Power Corz cable for your shifters. Works well with your XTR setup. I have them on my Scalpel
    2119_2.jpg

Maybe your brake rotors too. I'm not 100% sure but what does your rotors weigh?

I had it on my Scalpel but I couldn't get it to work. I try so many new chains with it. The shifting/gear change was awful, also it kept skipping all the time. Maybe because I'm a big guy and the Recon Cassette was just too soft for me.

It works on the work-stand.

TBH, I really don't think it would work on the bike and I don't really want to damage any other components (or me...) if it failed. I may give it a go on an old set of wheels just to see.

SIDs will be rebuild with everything working properly. Not sure yet if they're going on this bike or the XTC.

I like how the Reba's feel and I'd rather have that for enduro events than save 100g. Did I really just say that?
