The Hampshire Hilly Hundred and the King of the Downs look interesting, too.

I did the King of the Downs last year and have never been so miserable out on a bike - it was cold wet and windy and I baled out after the first half then almost fell asleep driving home afterwards. My fault for thinking it was summer, not having the right kit for winter, and stopping to shelter from the torrential rain, then getting very cold. Most of the first half will be familiar territory for you...second half looked more interesting.

    Hmm. I remember that report...

I'm just not a fan of long rides away from home in this weather, it's just no fun if the weather turns and you can't bail for home. I'll stick to summer sportives! Yeah yeah, MTFU I know... at least by riding in Surrey or on an SCR ride there is always a bailout option.

How long should I spend at the feed station at a Sportive?

Not very long. You start to get cold and your legs may seize up.

This year on HOTA I skipped the first feed (I had plenty of fluid and bars to last) and only stayed long enough at the second to drink a cup of coffee...

Another thing to practice is eating on the go. Without dropping litter along the route, natch.

I quite enjoyed the 'King of the Downs' last year, except for being on my own all day.
.. and the last 20km was a bit horrid.

If the advanced weather forecast is to be believed (and it's not), the weather is looking
good for Sunday. I'd say no need for overshoes, maybe even shorts

When I do the New Forest, I won't be eating on the go- but only because I can't ride with no hands. Never had a problem seizing up after stops. Even long ones.....

You don't have to ride with no hands at all to eat on the go! Good thing to practise riding one-handed for long rides so you can eat when you like.

I was quite impressed when I managed to retrieve a clif bar from rear pocket, un-wrap and eat it whilst on the Capital-to-Coast just before the halfway feed stop (I hadn't planned on stopping!) I even chucked it back in the back pocket to save a little for later in the ride.
Also had plenty of practice retrieving the shot-blox - just make sure you know what's in each pocket to save on fumbling and do it on the flat/open sections :-)

I'm impressed you managed to eat a Clif Bar at all. They're nice, but, by 'eck, they take some chewing.

True, but frankly I never feel that steady with one hand, jersey pockets are hard to reach with a rucksack and jacket on (don't start..), and in any case I'd rather pull over, enjoy the scenery, get my breath back. Really not a problem.

At the moment they are one of my favorites, don't find them as chewy as some I've sampled. Besides you can spend 30 minutes sucking the bits from your teeth that you've missed so they last longer!

I've grabbed a few Torq bars as I understand they are the one's being offered on the Magnificat. Had the Organic (?) Mango on the last social ride (the wet one!) and it was quite nice :-)

+1 I don't find them overly chewy. Try eating the SiS ones - it's like munching on cardboard.

Chewy foods don't bother me. I've been known to bite through meat, gristle and bone. I quite enjoy it.

I had no problems eating on a ride, hold the item in a hand, tear it open with teeth, eat and go. Obviously slow down when doing eat.

Bananas are impossible to eat when pedaling as they snap.

On a dental related report. I had a dental problem around this time last year. Meant two weeks off work, a two week course of antibiotics to reduce the face swelling so the dentist could operate. My face was temporarily disfigured due to swelling. It's happening again, face swollen, tooth ache. A few days before the ride and about a week before my birthday. Sucks balls big time. Still going try and go on the ride though.

For any thing in a wrapper apart from energy gels i cut the tops of the wrappers before the ride, saves trying to bite them off while riding.

Not really a sportive but against my better judgement I'm off on the Kent Invicta Grimpeur 100 on Sunday, which is officially an Audax. I've never ridden an Audax before but I assume they're pretty similar to Sportives, there's just a few more men with beards about.

It does promise a good 100k of hilly miles, running out of Otford, around the fantastic Kent countryside if anyone is at a loose end.
pain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................

Ironic I know but the two aren't linked.

    General question:

I'm on antibiotics, should I be doing a long distance ride?

Yes. I've been on and off antibiotics for the last 3 months (thanks NHS) you'll be fine to cycle, it's not stopped me.
