Coputer pickup on the rear wheel?

I've got a cateye OS 1.0, its not the fanciest of cycle computers I know but it does the job.
Currently setup on the rear wheel for use on the turbo however I will be heading back out on the road soon as shoulder has almost recovered but with winter approaching I want to keep it set up on the rear wheel so I can do some turbo work some days. Only problem is the wire for the computer mount only stretches to about a 3rd of the way along the top tube!
I'm confident with my electronics in order to splice and solder the wire to make it longer in order to reach the bars but I was just wondering if anyone else has done this with their computer and what the outcome was. The only example I could find online the fella was saying that the signal was greatly reduced and inaccurate....seems unlikely that this should occur unless the wire was made excessively long!
Anyone have any experience doing this?
