Skinson - is it your advert?

You seem to be defending this guy pretty strongly despite overwhelming evidence that he's on the make.

I just can't work out what you're seeing that we're missing?

I'm not seeing anything that you aren't. But unlike you I'm not prepared to call someone a thief or a scammer when I haven't got the slightest clue as to where the bike come from.

I take your point - but I don't see why you're not calling it as you see it?

Surely the whole point of forums like this is to call people's attention to tricks like this, and try and stop others from making the same mistakes.

We give advice - sometimes it's what tyres are best, and sometimes, unfortunately, it's on less savoury topics like what to do if you're run over, or if you're arrested for being in receipt of stolen goods.

It's a pretty standard scam - go on the US eBay site, steal the pics and the description, post on eBay/Gumtree etc. and then ask for Western Union or other payment as buyer is away/moved country etc.

It should really only catch out the greedy and the stupid.

PS, Dave come on, a bike being offered for far less than its worth. The same ad appearing in several different cities at once (and each indicating with a map that the bike is in that city). Saying that they aren't in the country and asking to be paid by Western Union, the con-artist's favourite money transfer method. The non-UK license plate on the car.

There's wanting to believe in the goodness of all human kind. Then there's being absurdly naive. Or a troll.

I'm not overly concerned at the thought of a summons dropping on my mat for that.

I hope you're wearing a helmet up on that horse of yours.

  • On the plus side, I can't wait to try out his line next time someone asks me about my bike in Richmond Park and I say "It takes cycling to new heights!"

So do you seriously believe that it is a genuine buy? If so buy it and I'll buy it from you for an extra £200. The Cervelo is a reasonably rare site and yet there are versions with an identical price and spec available in Glasgow, Newcastle and London. I haven't used Gumtree but I assume the map is supposed to show where the seller is based - if that is the case is it not suspicious? Who in their right mind would be selling a bike worth about £5000 for £650 after riding it for 10 minutes on a trainer? The reason he gives for not using it is that he had back surgery less than a month after buying it - now he either has very good private healthcare or would have been aware of his upcoming surgery and its likely consequences on his cycling ability.

As for the Madone, the seller is now located abroad (no mention in his ad) and wants to be paid by Paypal. I'd hate to see what it takes for you to spot a dodgy bike, does the seller have to be dressed in stripey pajamas, wear a mask and carry a sack with swag written on it to raise your suspicion?

Thanks for your kind offer pross, but I've just bought a new bike! Also, it's a bit of a fallacious argument? Where did I say I didn't believe it stolen? Or that it wasn't a scam? I actually said No one on here knows if it's stolen or not, yet have hung drawn and quartered the seller? Do you walk on water by any chance? Can you turn water in to wine perhaps? Raise the dead?

Saw the Cervelo in Newcastle.gumtree this afternoon for £650. I Googled the model and it came out at £4000+ .....Mmmm, I was a bit suspicious.

Now, back home from work, the adverts gone! Drat, I've missed a bargain.

I bought this about two months ago, it was OK as a starter but now I want something more in line with my abilities. £200 cash and it's yours. Meet me round the back of Leeds market tonight.

Now that looks like a very good buy. By the way my mate is after a De Rosa King but only wants to spend £100 tops. Do you think you would be able to 'find' one of these for me as well?
  • Shame, I've just got rid of one of those. Mind I've got something in the shed called a Stork or something. £95 do you?

Would that be just behind the back of where the "Mad House" used to be?

I can only see one person who has said it's definately stolen. Everyone else seems to be saying it suspicious and not to risk it. I haven't said it's definately stolen but I certainly wouldn't be risking my cash on it.
