If something's too good to be true.....

Ha! That pic's not taken in Glasgow... it's sunny!

That and they paid "$3200" for it. Not a chance that was copied and pasted from eBay.com...

This is weird. Two stunning bikes in one day on Glasgow Gumtree.

    Porker,

That's a good point. According to the Google map, the guy lives a short walk away from me so maybe I could go see it.

Can I get away with another bike?!?!

    I already have 2 roads, a hybrid and a MTB already :D

There's also what looks like a brand new 2009 5.2 madone pro on London gumtree for £650.

I've sent the guy some q's via email but no reply.

    Gotta be nicked though.

I took an interest in a similarly stunning looking deal on Gumtree, but he then confided that he had moved to the States and wanted payment sight unseen via Western Union. He kindly offered to pay all the taxes and shipping, but I nonetheless concluded he was full of sh*t.

Don't go getting your hopes up, but do let us know how you get on....

FFS - It's clearly a stolen bike the tea leaf is trying to flog quickly.

    It's FAR too cheap...

Its the Cervelo that am interested more now.

Seems genuinely enough. I've mailed the guy and will await his answer.

It's very likely to be stolen. Buying stolen bikes means there is a market for stolen bikes meaning that more thieves nick bikes and there is more bike crime.

If people don't buy stolen bikes then the market isn't there and thieves have to go elsewhere.

I'm glad you find bike theft amusing, let's hope it never happens to you eh?

Remember hearing a story about a guy that went to buy a car that was advertised on gumtree. Turns out it was a set-up and they robbed him (violently I think) of his cash.
    More problems but still living....
  • The exact same Cervelo is now for sale on the London Gumtree around the Lewisham area

    FFS get some morals.

The Cervelo is stolen. Those wheels are probably worth more than the price the person is asking for. The record groupset is worth about twice the asking price. That was probably once someones pride and joy, you know the best bike that you love so much, that Cervelo was probably adored in the same way by someone elses, taken out on weekdays and ridden in many a sportive.

The Madone is likely to be stolen to.

People who knowingly buy stolen bikes are as bad as the theives themselves.

Monsieur Poirot, I can't quite work out how you arrive at the conclusion that I condone cycle theft.

My post was clearly sarcastic, along the lines of, if it's too true, then it probably is! Note the roll eyes smileys, etc..

I pointied out the recent value of similar machines, in perhaps more genuine transactions, by virtue of an apparent number of bidders or potential buyers.

On the basis that the advertised bike is not priced remotely near to a sensible level, alarm bells might ring?

As I have no idea, how despicable cycle thieves operate, i can't be sure,,,but would they really advertise in such a medium, with photo, serial number and contact details?

If anything I would expect this is a straight forward scam, where someone tries to take £600 from someone fairly gullible who thinks they have the chance at a bargain..?

For all we know it is a misprint and the actual desired price is £1600. ???

So, to the original poster, I hope you see this in time and have not rushed off on my advice alone to buy the bike.. :(

When i wrote "what could possibly go wrong?"

What I actually meant was......It could infact go very wrong!!!

apologies if you acted on my words...I will clearly have to be slightly less ambiuous in my future posts :)

Yes because they want to appear as legitimate as possible.

    Could be that.

The fact that we've seen a Madone and a Cervelo around the same price with similar background in the same area on what appears to be two incredibly sunny days I get suspicious.

Sure I may be wrong but both bikes combined (or even either one) aroses too much suspicion and too many questions for me not to conclude that the sale is dodgy.

Of course they're bloody dodgy! The only uncertainty is how exactly the scum intends to shaft the numpty prospective buyer

I got a email back from some guy that he's abroad and blah blah blah, send payment by paypal etc.

Now I wouldnt be so stupid to do so and I had my suspicion that it could be stolen but when you see something so cheap, its always worth a shot especially when the guy claims to have the receipts and handbook as he does in the advert.

I would never knowingly buy stolen goods. Infact, if you search through my post history, you'll find me helping a member on here get his bike back after it was stolen.

Anyways, my search continues. I need a new bike to sit along with my Ribble and my Felt Z35 :D

Glad you've seen sense - and FWIW - a Madone, no matter how cheap, is not winter hack - why isn't your ribble your winter hack (or have you got one of their nice looking CF frames)

I agree that it is less likely to be a stolen bike as a scam to entice you to a meeting where they know you have £600 and then mug you. The item description seems more detailed than you get for most stolen bikes (saw a dodgy one on ebay recently where the only description of the components was 'clicky pedals!). Also, the reference on the Cervelo to the manuals and reference documents - you wouldn't expect these if stolen (unless it was off the back of a lorry) so it would be an easy check to make before handing over your cash. I'm amazed at the tactic of making the price so obviously low as to create suspicion and also advertising a bike that is relatively rare as the Cervelo on more than one Gumtree location seems a mistake!

Tell you what? I'm glad you don't have access to a noose and tree!!! You don't even know the guy but he's a thief, you haven't a clue if it's stolen or otherwise! Any cheap bikes on here and they are either stolen or scams....grow up. When you know the facts then post away, until then keep your opinions to yourselves....

There are many clues in the advert as to the likelihood of the bike being stolen or a scam - the beautiful thing about (most) human beings is that we learn from experience and recognise certain patterns that re-occur and alert us to danger.

It's not a lynching - it's using patterns from past stolen bikes and scams and making a very logical conclusion from the evidence presented.

  • If it's in Glasgow why does the Merc in the garage in the second Cervelo photo not have a British numberplate?

Sorry Skinson me old mucker but if it looks like sh*t, smells like sh*t and tastes like sh*t, guess what.....

    Let's hope nobody gets a taste :D
  • OK, no arguments please, the guy selling the Cervelo clearly didn't even know what a bicycle was until someone fenced this red-hot number to him.

"So Mr Leaf, you spanked four grand on this......then strapped it to a turbo to stress-test its sculpted frame. In the summer. Then decided that 85% was a perfectly reasonable loss to take on it."

This ad is basically made up of bits of other ads, hastily researched - it's the most passion-free write up I've ever seen for a bike - can you imagine having a conversation like this with a Cervelo owner?

I don't wish to rush to judgement here.

    (OK, maybe I do.)

all of a sudden the exclusivity of it doesnt entice me. :P but maybe hes doing it to just get coverage? the list of specs seems legit, but a bike of that spec must retail for over three times the asking price.
Doesnt stop me wanting it tho.
