Hello! I am fairly new to cycling but am considering getting a trainer for winter training. I`m just concerned about stories i`ve read about tyre wear and bike wear. Do i need to get a spare back wheel specifically for the trainer? Help very much appreciated!

  • every time you use you bike it will cause wear and tear on the bike. fact of life.
Some people choose to have a spare wheel with a cold tyre, particluarly if they do long sessions on the turbo. Using a normal tyre will increase the wear as it heats up. I use an old normal tyre on my TT bike which wont get too many outings this winter.

I'd say just get using the turbo with your existing bike & tyres. You really have to do hours and hours and hours on the turbo to wear a tyre out: just treat yourself to a new back tyre in time for spring. The one essential item for turbo training, IMO, is an ipod or similar: it really is a very boring way to pass the time otherwise.
