i need to train for this http://www.madmarchharesportive.co.uk/enter.php
i currently ride about 200 miles a month, and have never ridden more than 50 miles. its all to support this http://www.justgiving.com/steven-loxam/ but time is precious due to work and family and i need to up my mileage by 50% per month to get there.
i tend to do 20-25 mile rides at the weekend and a couple of 12 mile blasts in the week.
i can fit in more of the 12 milers (when the kids are in bed) to increase the total mileage.
what i would like to know is should i do the full distance before the ride and if so how close to the ride should i do it?
i hate hills (cos i'm fat)

Doing some long hard miles before winter sets in.
Getting in loads of 100k rides before it gets too cold.

Then once winter sets in preparoing for next seasons racing, so starting doing intervals and lactate threshold workouts.

I don't really have any goals on the bike for the autumn, it's all about next season now. Having said that, there's a few things I can think of:

    1. Avoid illness
    2. Avoid overtraining during the off-season
    3. Avoid gaining any more weight
    4. Formulate a proper training plan instead of just riding as much as possible
    5. Investigate getting a powermeter

Number 5 depends on finances, and number 4 could also involve spending more money in the form of coaching. What I seriously have to consider is whether I carry on with the equipment and methods I currently use, and hope for better results next season, or change the way I train and spend even more money on a powermeter and turbotrainer etc. On one hand I'm tempted to cut my losses, then again I want to do everything possible to avoid taking a kicking every weekend next year. Decisions.....
  • Coming off my 3 week break on saturday, so winter training starts then.

Want to get back to 70KG before I start racing again in march (3kg down on this years racing weight)

Want to hit the gym in a proper, structured manner as part of my training

Want to have the best winter i've ever had!

Targeting Etape du Dales next year.
Plan at the moment is one long hilly ride, one shorter slightly quicker ride and two weights sessions a week until January.

Maybe slightly OT but a few people have mentioned the gym - I did a weights session once or twice a week last winter, and I don't think it helped. I'm sure many will disagree, but fitness is generally more important than strength for cycling.

Shall we start a 'no-mojo club'?

    Edwin,
What did you do in the gym?
My plan's not set in stone yet but my thoughts were:
Weights will help my force to pedal, will help prevent injury and used in conjunction with plyometrics will hopefully improve my power.

It will come back..I lost mine for 4 months this year but it has been back for 3 months now and that original passion has come back with it....
  • I'm back into the cycling buzz since feb. Doing roughly 120 miles per week commuting. Have built up the training & social rides since and am now doing roughly 200 miles a week all in.

I have been off and on cycling since I was a kid and have always wanted to do L'etape, so that is the plan for 2010.

So, the plan for Autumn/Winter is to start putting some serious miles in. Not quite sure on specifics but basically one hard long ride at least once a week (fnar) and some interval/hill training. Plus weights and swimming.

Jacster - I just did 3 or 4 sets on each of the resistance machines, so leg raise, leg press, calf raise etc. Also some core stuff and a few pullups etc to maintain a bit of upper body. Squats would possibly be more effective, but I didn't do any free weights.
If you feel you're lacking strength, then the gym isn't a bad thing, I just don't think it's the most beneficial use of training time. I've cancelled my membership now, as I was racing as much as possible from March onwards and didn't have time to go (or recover enough to make it worth going). I've got a few medicine balls, Swiss ball, dumbbells and and pullup frame at home so that's pretty much everything I need.
Riding fixed with a big gear improved my leg strength a lot, but I'm still lacking POWER, which is a different thing....

The passion is there, the legs aren't!
  • Eat shit and not touch the bike for 2 weeks.

Start the long miles, threshold sessions and getting in the gym mid october.

  • Cheers for your thoughts, mine are

    1) To lose the 4lb that I put on during my hols (Yes only 4lb)
    2) 70-100k Per Week either on the Road or The Tacx
    3) Autumn Sportive
    4) To continue the training throughout the winter for a 300 miler in the Spring

Not to get ill and spend 18months regretting it.
Spend more time running /kayaking (no cleaning the bike!!)
    Build up core strength
Not being afraid to take time off/out from cycling.

Continue geeting fitter/faster with less riding...

Base miles. I never really built up an aerobic base. So i plan on doing many long weekend rides without pushing too hard.
    Shazam !!
  • i plan on getting faster through the winter learning how to maintain a good speed higher then 17mph (i can already do this) hence why i want to get faster.

increase my top speed by whizzing pass cars! and getting stronger so i can take on the fearsome PARBOLD HILL
