I currently have a 24 speed which i built myself but just out of curiosity can a mountain bike manage more gears or is 24 its limit.

no a mountain bike normally has a limit of 27 gears.
they have 3 chainrings on the crankset and a 9 speed cassette.

a double set up with 7 speed? why?
10 speed double though - sram xx.. if only I was really really rich..0 -
Between my 3 bikes I have 21 just now. But my garage floor has 54.
To actually answer the question in a sensible way... 21 speed was standard for ages, then we got 24, now 27 speed is pretty much standard. But they cover more or less the same ratios anyway, it's just that you get more gears inbetween- so closer ratios, more choice of exactly what mincing gear you want to use to mince up a hill, incredibly incredibly low or just incredibly low for example. 24 speed is perfectly good though.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -
9 on one.
27 on the other.
26 on the roadie (don't ask  )Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -
Have a look at all your ratios.

I have 27, but I'd be interested to see the min. amount I could get away with. I've tried when out on the bike to use as few as possible, but that's not a true test. If the gears are not there, then you can't use them.
Although I consider myself relatively fit for my age, I know that I couldn't get away with SS though! Not around here! To be honest, I have no desire to either!0 -
27 at the moment on the X7s. And Realman are those gold bolts on your bike? You tart. :roll:0

I have 5
But yeah 27 is the max.0 -

Nope you can have 30 on a standard 8/9 freehub."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I thought 33 was the current max, but shimano are due to bring out 14 speed soon I heard.
And of course, I don't think there's anything to stop you running a triple with a rohloff - 42 gears anyone? (could even run a quad - 4 chainrings)Whytepeak wrote:26 on the roadie (don't ask  )
Going to have to ask - how?0 -
i have 9 but only use two, gear 1 and 8Best quote ever (pinkbike): "i've heard that Hill pees, deffecates, vomits and masturbates before each race to keep the weight down"0

the most would be one of the sram hub gears with a freehub body and a triple. So i think it is 5*10*3 which would be a lot0

If you could fit all the levers on one set of handlebars, that is..0

2 bikes - 2 gears at the moment0

Theoretical maximum is 44 as there was a quad crankset.0

Some say you only need one, but they are generally loonies.0

i know sheldon brown once made a 63 speed.....
a 3x7x3
triple front on a 7 back on a free hub grafted onto a sturmey archer. i want to do..
a quad front ring on a 11 speed cassete on a roholf. that would be... *mental calculations* : (drum role) 616 gears.I like bikes and stuff0
