Best £300-400 Road Lights? (To see where you are going)

A difference of £30-50 but not £200 I suspect that the cheaper lights do not provide the same spread, dimension, depth, coverage etc as more expensive lights. Sure they have the same/similar lumens but so does a £5 torch from B&Q I think there is more to this than just a simple case of higher margins
Donnie check out the beam shots here :

The magicshine shot is a lot better than your Enduro Maxx
And heres the review that first brought the P7 light to my attention http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/mountain_bi ... w_led.html0 -
Cougie,
I don't own an Exposure Enduro MaXx nor am I thinking of getting one. I was thinking of the Exposure MaXx Daddy or the Wilma 5 but am also now thinking of the Toro. None of these appear on this (very cool) light test which is a shame.
As for the value for money thing, its definition is not set in stone but I do not yet see the P7 as being better value for money as it has no discernable better features than any of the lights I am thinking of getting therefore IMO opinion offers no more 'value for money' but they are considerabley cheaper for what would appear to be the same or similar features. I still see the difference in price as being more than Exposure having added very high margin to the same product. I would imagine that there is something more to this than simple greed and Exposure trying to stiff the cycling man.
I personally would not feel that I was buying the same or similar product if I were to choose the P7 over the Toro or MaXx D but I could be wrong, Maybe I need to email Exposure and ask for their advice?0 -

Yeah, they'll tell you to go for the P7...0 -
Yeah, so they will0

Eeeerm, that's kinda the definition of value for money, same features better price...
Let us assume you have two lights, both which output an amount of light in a pattern, weigh the same and have the same run-time, one cost £5 the other costs £500
the £5 one is 100 times better value for money.0 -
Exposure are probably spending quite a lot on R&D and marketing and have high distribution costs, and maybe even sponsorship. The manufacturers of the P7 lights probably minimise all of these costs. Furthermore, Exposure are competing with several other well known brands of bike light, and their prices are probably in the ball park. Their marketing also seems to be very effective, they have a lot of people convinced that this sort of spend is necessary! The P7 lights, however, most probably perform as well at a fraction of the price. Ultimately, quality and longevity may suffer (but may not!), but I would rather spend £50 on a light that might last 2 years, rather than £250 on one that lasts 3, when it is likely the next best thing in bike lights will be out in 12 months tempting me to upgrade. Spend more if you wish - but there is no mystery here, these cheap far eastern lights are the dogs! Oh, and sure - ask Exposure what the best lights are - I'm sure you will get an objective response :roll:0

Sorry, Ridewhenever but I don't agree with you.
It would be 100 times cheaper not better value for money. As I have said and IMO better value would be that it came with extra features such as two lights with the same spec, lumens output, weight, build quality and around the same price point (say no more than £20-25 difference in cost) but one came with an extra battery pack and an extra helmet mount. That would offer better value for money. Now, if one light came with the same spec etc and offered more in the way of extras but cost a lot less it would be both cheaper and offer more value. In the case of the P7 I only see this as being a cheaper and potentialy inferior offering and adding no extra value.
Having watched the video of the P7 I can see why it is a far cheaper option as it is essentialy a very brigh flash-light with (what looks like) a narrow bright spot throw. As such it may not be able to compete with the type of depth, clarity and spread of light that a purpose built cycle light can offer. This along with a better build quality, weatherproofing, battery life and longevity may be a reason for the difference in price too??
As for asking Exposure, I doubt they will point me in the direction of the P7 but I do think they can offer their reasons for the prices they have come up with. It is down to the customer to believe them or not.0 -
It's as though you are looking for excuses!
I've gone from an expensive light that stopped working to a P7. It is all you could want for road or MTB trail riding. I personally don't see why I would need more light, it's bl00dy bright enough!0 -
Thats the thing it's not just about brightness!
If people are fine with it then that is good by me but I'm happy to shell out for an Exposure,Lupine or any other cycle specific light over the P7 if even it just comes down to the fact the P7 is one Fugly looking mofo of a light (not important in the dark I know)0 -
After all this talk I've just bought a P7-C.
NapD are you sure you're not the Uk Rep for P7's !0 -

A lot of offence intended, you're a moron.
value for money, effectively performance/£
if your performance is the same and your cost is less the you have better VFM.
I do however agree with you that the P7 are not really comparable with the exposure as they have different performance.0 -
Donnie - are you SURE you're Scottish ???
This may help you : http://www.qualityresearchinternational ... rmoney.htm
Not sure what video you've seen for the P7 torch - but sometimes the video doesnt pick up what you actually see. I was using the P7for offroading last winter in the pitch black - brilliant. You still need a helmet light for looking round corners - but the Fenix AA torches are great for that.0 -

Nicely put
There was/is no offence intended at all, just because I don't agree with your evaluation of what value for money means you get all childlike and start with the name calling. The only offence that has been caused by anyone so far on this thread is by you. Chill the f^^k out there, it's only a thread about which bike light to buy...Jesus!
Cougie,
Yes I'm a Scottish although I have no idea why you would have any reason to doubt that?? Unless you are making some stereotype about Scots always being cheap and I appear not to be in going for the more expensive option? But thanks for the link.although it really neither confirms or denies my opinion to be honest and appears to be just..random?
Anyway my decision is pretty much made.

My girlfriend lives out in the countryside (no - she's not a farm animal) which means that I have to ride on some rather nasty roads in the dark. I've only got a crappy Topeak on the front, so I'm also rather tempted by all of this P7 talk.
Could NappyD or one of the other owners please post a link to all the parts that I'll need from Deal Extreme. I've tried searching for 'P7' on the site, but it seems to bring up about 7 different lights.0 -
Well, you've bought a light and all, but I'll chuck this one in the mix too - just in case anyone else is looking for a great light

Or if you need more battery life - go for the Magicshine light off DX - that comes with everything you need.
P7 rocks.0 -
Slightly off topic.
I have got a Fenix LD20 that I am planning to convert to a helmet light – do you guys have got any ideas of any secure helmet straps for it or universal ones?
And, will one of those Magic Shine suffice or do you reckon I need 2?
Thanks,

Gabriel - get an old inner tube - cut some up to go under the torch and make elastic bands with the off cuts or use hair bands to strap it to the helmet. Easy.
I'd think that one magic shine is more than enough ! Its massively bright.0 -

Very funny
I have gone and bought a new Exposure Toro so it would not fit anyway. But, thanks all the same.0 -
On the other hand I've gone with the senisble choice and ordered a 900 lumen P7 torch, a 250 lumen r2 torch (to helmet mount), 6 18650 protected batteries, a charger, a pair of boxes to keep the spare batteries in while they not being used, mains adapter, I've also gone with the express delivery.
All for the extravagant price of £63
All I have to do now is wait for delivery
Bugger! I've gone and forgotten to order any mounts :oops:0
