garmin 605 uploading gpx

Hi,
I've planned a route on Marengo GPS route planner and then exported it as a GPX file. Its only 3mile route.
I then transfer the .gpx file manually to my edge 605. When i then load the route (menu > where to > saved rides).... it seems to add allsorts of waypoints to my route ?? and the route ends up being 11.3 mile (this particular example)
What am i doing wrong?
Thanks

what are you using to plot the route? if you use MapSource and the route tool then save as GPX in the GPX folder it should be fine.
Some of the online systems don't use the same GPX format as Garmin, for some reason they insist on doing things a bit differently
MapSource is also the best way to do it as it displays the same maps as the unit.
for better advice try the garmin connect forum https://forums.garmin.com/index.php

i was using Marengo GPS route planner - and it has the option to upload to garmin gpx format. (http://www.marengo-ltd.com/map2/index.php). I looked inside the gpx file created (its just an xml file)... and it had the 29 waypoints i created, but once on the garmin edge it was adding more waypoints.
It is like it is trying to do some autorouting - which i've turned off in the settings... maybe i havent turned it off properly.
I just tried the route as a tcx course, and it worked fine.
I'll have a go with MapSource and see what it does.

there are three types of points on a Garmin GPS
Waypoints - flags in the list
Route points - similar to way points but only within a route
Track points - the crumb trail recorded by the GPS or provided by the likes of bikely
when i use GPX i always save the file manually rather than upload as this gives you more control over adding and removing routes and waypoints.
I have in the past used some online software, i forget which, that when it uploaded or saved the GPX created waypoints rather than route points which filled the waypoints list with 10s of entries, very annoying.
Map source every time for me even for downloads from bikely. I take the route from bikely then open in mapsource as a track then draw over it with a route, this works great and results in the Edge not having to work hard to calculate the route itself. The calculation when you start navigating the route is very quick.M_G0 -
thank for that.
So if route points are only within a route, then what are waypoints within?
When i have a gpx file with waypoints, how does the edge device interpret this?..... where are all these extra points coming from?0 -
waypoints in a GPX file with a route will also appear in the waypoints list.
if the gpx is just a set of way points then that's all that will appear, these will also be shown at all times on the map. they exist on their own with or without a route going through them.
If you open 4 Mapsource windows and open a track in one and route in another and the some way points in the third you can then drag and drop these into the fourth (or do it with just two windows one at a time). Now you can either save 3 GPX files one with the track, one with the route, one with waypoints and a fourth that holds all 3 things. Uploading the first three files to the Edge will be the same as uploading just the fourth containing all of them.
The transfer to unit function in mapsource is weaker than just saving as GPX as it over writes what was previously transferred, i forget which file it uploads to. Saving direct the GPX folder lets you just delete the separate items easily later or upload with no risk of affecting what's already on the unit.M_G0 -
Hi again,
I'm still having trouble...
So if i save it as a course (tcx file) then i can go to training and follow a course - but i don't get turn by turn prompts on the unit (which i want).
If i save it as a gpx, it still decides to figure out its own route and put lots of turns where there shouldnt be turns.
My gpx file looks like so: <gpx version="1.1" creator="Marengo Route Creator - http://www.marengo-ltd.com/map2/" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd"> <rte>
Test Route
<type>Route</type> <rtept lat="51.4729499557919" lon="-0.129239559173584">
</rtept> <rtept lat="51.4776276905175" lon="-0.126943588256836">
</rtept> <rtept lat="51.4772267606226" lon="-0.121396780014038">
</rtept> <rtept lat="51.4783760835589" lon="-0.121450424194336">
</rtept> ...... <rtept lat="51.5052232402233" lon="-0.105539560317993">
</rtept> </rte> </gpx>
They look like route points. But as soon as i tell the edge to follow that route it starts off like so:
* N on priory grove
* right on landdowne way
* left of landsdowne gardens
* take round....etc
* Via point 3-
I don't want all those detailed turns beforehand....i just want it to navigate me to my next route point...!!
Thanks

are you using the route tool that draws a pink line in Map Source, the icon is three black dots with pink lines joining them?
In Map Source, when you click points on the roads it should link them following a route on the road. if you do two points in a route across town from each other it will probably think for a second then draw a complicated route. If not check you have the preferences set correctly.
Edit > preferences > routing tab > Use Auto-RoutingM_G0 -
...www.marengo-ltd.com/map2 (The Marengo site) now has the ability to save a route with Garmin extensions enabled which prevents the "auto routing" of the device which causes so many problems. It enables the 605/705 to just give directions at each waypoint.---

Nice. I'll give that a go. Thanks0
