172km between Berja and Sierra Nevada.

Interestingly there are two back to back mountains to scale with only 700m descent seperating them which should cause some serious exhaustion if some GC guys go all out.

13_perfil.gif

The Alto de Monachil begins is 8.6 kilometers, with a maximum gradient of 16.6% and an average gradient of 7.9%.
The Sierra Nevada is 16.9 kilometers in length and includes ramps reaching gradients of 10%, but only 5.5% average gradient.

  • Just noticed that Kreuziger is 58mins down! he is not doing his leadership bid for Liquigas in 2010 any favours.

Martins is 25mins back. I am waiting for him to do something. I mean he has it in the legs, having already beaten Valverde up a climb.

Bouygues only have 4 riders left in the race with another week to go.

Hmm, Euskaltel and Liquigas are on the front of the bunch... no sign of CdE. Hopefully that means Valverde is not feeling good.

Moncoutié goes clear at the foot of the climb. Stage in the bag.
  • Mouncoutie out ahead with 10mins on the peloton and 26km to climb.

The peloton looks very small and they haven't hit the climb yet.

    No S, frenchie. Martin.
  • Valverde looks more than a bit uncomfortable, or is he doing an acting job?
He doesn't like the Monachil. Cost him dear, a few years back.

  • LOL.

Like you say peloton is really small - only 15 riders. Moncoutie has 7mins so the gains dropped rapidly.

Where are his team-mates? So strong yesterday, nowhere today. J Rod is up the road... no help for Valverde.

This is more like it. Proper racing.

Basso, Gesink, Valverde, Mosquera, Evans. That's the race.
  • How can they keep this up - there are still 20kms to climb! This is going to be superb.

That's the second day in a row I've seen a dude with an ENORMOUS sandwich. What other sport allows you to see such things, eh? Brilliant.

Man against man now. 5 GC riders, none of them with any team-mates.
  • Btw, this climb means Snowy Range in English and it is the 9th time it has been in the Vuelta.

    Navarro caught by GC riders.

Neutral service wheel change. Disaster. Even Sammy S and Cunego pass him.

    Unbelievable. Lost almost a minute.

I hope the others slow up a bit as it would be only fair. Cannot lose it from a puncture.
