The pretty cool thing about Llandegla, as someone esle said, is that it's all rideable by mostly anyone, but if you REALLY start caning it, then you can make it as dangerous as you want. Other centres like Coed y Brenin make it nigh-on impossible to reach crazy speeds (for the most part).
So, whilst I'm going hell-for leather in Llandegla, I'm always ever so slightly cautious about overshooting a corner by going too fast, and possibly hitting a tree.
I am tempted to take the full power ranger get-up there sometime, and go absolutely farking bonkers on the blacks, just for a giggle - because if I went too fast then, I'd just bounce off the trees!
I'm sure most of those berms can be railed abso-fricking-lutely flat-out :D

Some guys were riding wearing pisspots but then switching to FF for the black... they'd carried them in their trail packs all the way

I did enjoy the speed of the black... you could get some real speed up. Think that now I know the route a bit, i'll go back and go FASTERRRR!

    I'll race you

The biggest danger of going fast on the black is on the last "loop". It's a section where you descend down some awesome turns and kickers, then go uphill again, then descend some more before the final big-ass climb to rejoin the red.

The jumps at the end of that first descent are a bit strange - there's one fairly big one, which if you don't squash, will fire you straight into the upslope of the next kicker.
    Interesting stuff!

I haven't been there for a few years, so it's on my "Things to do" list.

Went there a while back and 3 lads I coached entered the Fire Service Mtb champs, as it was "Open." All the Sam's -firemen - weren't too happy when the lads came, 1st, 2nd and 3rd! I got a flat on one of the last rough descents and went from 4th to last! DOH!

It's getting quite a bit of coverage, so as I'm in Llanferres in a few weeks, I'll take a look-see.

    You're on!!

    Sounds like fun!
I know of a way to loop the best black section, yeah. You ride up that bloody hill, to the fireroad, then turn right instead of carrying on left, then you'll arrive at the start of the black again.

hmm, not sure exactly how a race would work on such a narrow trail, but it would be fun as hell!
  • was up there last Friday, its a good spot

the red is a good xc loop and fairly tough when ridden hard - would love to race on it

did two laps and managed a 1hr7min for each - only bit i didnt do was the small jump section with the climb out of it, passed alot of ppl , is that an alright time ?

will be back there this fri and would love to do 2hr 10 for both - will see if it stays dry !!
  • Was up there sat my self caning all the drops nicely.

THe bit that makes me laugh was time before last i was up there. on the side of the black with one of our group fixing a puncture. the amount of people that came past us on very expensive bikes kitted out in armour and all that nosed off the drops there at 2MPH. made me feel better about myself (was having oh my god its hard work day)

    what drops? :?
  • the board edged ones, you can float a good few feet off them, loads of drops and small lips all over. I actually prefer these to table tops as i never get entry speed right on table tops hehe

They're no bigger than kerbs though?!?
Bloody hell, no wonder so many people back off on the ones in glentress.

hehehe! I'll bring the full face + body armour

Think I know the route you mean to push back up... I spotted it but it looked like one hell of a push!!

I dropped the tall boardwalk thing... that was pretty high. Drop to bloody flat too! thought i'd really fecked my rear wheel after that one!

We all seem to measure drops in different ways lol. You can only really compare to flat - you could have a really long rollable slope, and call it a 12ft drop off.
  • Aye, a small 1ft drop can actually be extended by going faster...

For example the drops at glentress... the small is only about a foot, probably not even that, if you just basically roll it at low speed. But hit it with some speed and you can go quite far because the landing is so steep!

This is a nice one at Wharny:

    batey-rock-dropoff.jpg

3 foot? Obviously you can make it more if you track the wheels!
  • Rock is 3 foot high, but you can probably travel a good 3 foot without trying too hard..

    3x3 = 6 :D (good at maths arn't i!
  • I think thats Steve dropping the side of a mountain.... feck me that was big!

Tis in Wharny, suffice to say I have been nowhere near it with a bike (except to look off the top).

I suppose what I am saying is you can take a 1 foot step with a bit of a downslope after, hop off the front and call it a four foot drop lol.

I get what you mean... its like some people call the bigger drop at glentress 20ft (or some of the people we talked to there did)... in reality, the drop is about a foot and a half to the ground, but could be made way way bigger with a bit of speed and preloading the susp.

Got this monster in Chap woods (or Chapelfornia as Peaty used to call it!)

    c3VwZXJzb25pYzUyNUAyMDAwOTAzNzVAMkAyMDA3MDYxMTE4MDgyM0AxMjI1NTE5NzIw.jpg

It is just rollable, but if you launch it you will drop for several dozen feet!

not sure about the Glentress one only being a foot, well, the big one anyway.
here's a picture of me stood on top of it
    Big%20Drop%202.jpg
Now, me being about 5'10" tall, and the wodden drop being just near, or slightly over my waist, makes me think that it's probably abour 3 foot, to the start of the slope.

But, I've got another picture of me in mid air, looking from behind the drop, and just before landing, my head is below the level of the wodden ramp, and my wheels haven't touched terra firma yet, which means it's at least a 5 foot drop in practice.

See, this is why sizing drops is complimicated!

Oh, and of course, hit it at crazy speed, and you'er going to falla long way down, probably about 10 feet or so.
