Probably going to be a similar day to yesterday... breakaway succeeds to the finish, bunch breaks up a bit towards the end, but nothing major happens.

No Frank Schleck at the start this morning.

7 riders out front: TXURRUKA Amets (009), FEDRIGO Pierrick (041) and PALOMARES VILLAPLANA Adrian (087) have been joined by DURAN DAROCA Arkaitz (105), TURPIN Ludovic (019), HOOGERLAND Johnny (203) and GARCIA DA PENA David (215).

My PTP pick of Florencio attacked but his group got caught

I was close to picking Turpin. Don't know why but thought he might be good for some PTP highway robbery.

Well, this group is caught already, so he wouldn't have been any good....

I hoped a group would have been gone by now and the peloton would go up that col piano piano, but like it's going now my PTP pick might end up in a grupetto...

Moncoutie (again), Johnny Hoogerland (again!!) , De la Fuente (again!!!!!!!!!!!), and Txurruka away now, with a more serious gap

Hoogerland's at about 4.30 on GC so I can't see him being allowed much room.
  • Saxobank at the GT's.
    It's becoming an unfunny joke.
Their Giro squad was a travesty and now this pathetic effort.
After all, it's not as if they are some lowly French squad.
If they regularly get the "attendance not required" notification.....

John Gadret and Albasini abandon. Decent climbers. Mendrisio plans...

They dropped De la Fuenta and have 5 minutes now.... Johnny to win the Vuelta! :)
  • I nearly picked Hoogerland for today, but thought he must be knackered by now. Hat off to him though. Is there a most combative rider jeresy in the Vuelta?

I think you are being a bit harsh on them so far here they have two stage wins and a few days in the leaders jersey more than most teams and Schleck has gone home for knee surgery and will miss the worlds.
Gasping - but somehow still alive !

The gap has come right down to three and a half minutes. Just Hoogerland, Txurruka and Moncoutié out front.

The profile makes it quite hard to judge how difficult the finish is. What do you reckon... bunch sprint?

according to the road book wide roads with a shallow descent to the last kms, with a straight light climb to the finish, just 2 % so probably doable for all sprinters. It'll depend more on how fast they'll go on the climb they're now on, and whether any sprinters will be dropped. They've got it down to 2:40, so no reason to go furiously fast up, my guess is a full bunch sprint.

Well it looks like Liquigas don't want a sprint, anyway.

yes, they're going full out. Not completely clear why... for Bennati? and then fight 50 km more to keep Boonen, Greipel, etc from coming back?

Yep, Benna is still in the group. Cancellara is pulling Freire back... just a few seconds behind.

That'll be a lot of work... Bennati better win this one...

Is Freire back? What about Florencio?
  • Take it back, re Frank S.
Harmon says he's gone home for a vacant knee surgery slot.
No Lombardy or Worlds for the elder....

Freire is back thanks to Cancellara. Haven't seen any CTT riders.

Liquigas still riding in the first peloton with Bennati and Freire; Colombia leading a chase of a second peloton with Greipel at 44 seconds.
Di Gregorio has only 26 seconds with 30 km to go

Greggyr. Only TakeTheHighRoad had Benna. 10 for Freire, Cumulonimbus and FJS for Greipel.

Second peloton has come back. Boonen and others though still behind.

I fear my PTP leadership will be short lived. I need Freire to be out of the top 8.
  • Remi is one cool rider.
