Hi guys, first post but as I also live in Harrogate it seems a good topic to start!

The hill in that area that kills me is out of Pately, through Ramsgill to Lofthouse then turn right. If this is Gods own country he must have quite a sadistic streak! Starts off with a ridiculously steep half a mile, then just seems to go on and on. You can't even enjoy a fast descent on the other side due to the suicidal sheep!

I've only been back into cycling for a few months, using an old 80's Vitus 971 with a 52/39 and doing about 100 miles a week. Just yesterday picked up a Madone 4.5 from Boneshakers so looking forward to tackling that climb again with a compact!

I'm tempted by the chemo classic - I scouted the route on my motorbike yesterday. Some nasty climbs and scary descents (especially into Kettlwell). Longest ride I've done do far is 57 miles around similar terrain and felt ok, but I think I might just wait and see the weather first - parts of the route could be pretty desolate and miserable mid November!

John C - Have entered that event has well - looking forward to it if good weather.

Sagalout - Yes that Lofthouse climb is something else. One of my mates refers to it as the "Col de la Croix du Lofthouse"! There is a horrendous steep bit in the middle where you do a sharp left. You can guarantee that you will have a car up your backside at that point. :)

I'm impressed that you can get up that on a 52/39, you're certainly stronger than me.

I've plotted just the climb out on Bikehike.

    http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=24965

    Did it on a 39x27.

    I weigh 92kg.

Average power output for the climb (bearing in mind I had already done about 20 miles of hills, and 4 hours of hills the day before) was 340watts, ave speed 6.3mph!

Can't wait until my leg is working properly and I can get down to 80kg.

Thought I'd do a much easier 35 miler today.

It wasn't much easier!! Weather was ace though.
Even saw two kids walking their ferrets on leads!

There was no flat whatsoever and some of the descents were rather gnarly due to a mix of steepness / wet leaves.

Found the hardest hill I've ever done too! (coming out of Pately Bridge, turn left and OMG!)

    Almost broke me!

Thats a good hill, one I use in the winter months when I'm out in that direction, it's more a moors hill than a dales hill, as in the dales hills tend to be longer but not quite as steep, the moors ones are steeper but shorter. If you get chance ride over to the moors and check out Boltby Bank, it's a goody, I ride it on 30-23 on my summer bike but have done it on 42-25 just to prove a point. Try this route but the other way round http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-ki ... 7936939424

Thats good going on a 39/27 gear with the weight you are carrying!
I have done that hill quite a few times but either using a 30/25 or 34/26 gear depending on which bike I am out on.
It's funny, but I find Church Lane a tougher prospect. Mainly because every time I have gone up there the road seems to be wet and I battle for grip on the back wheel. So I tend to avoid Church Lane.

Yep Church lanes a goody too and I agree about searching for grip. But I'd rather be looking for grip on the way up than the way down

I assume you went down West End Lane from the Thruscross Reservior side.
Try doing it from the Otley side of it and instead of going right down the hill and up past the reservior carry on straight. There are 2 really nasty little climbs that way.

This is the ride I did today (Well, supposed to have done, I went a bit further in a couple of places and had to turn back, including missing the right hand turn at Greenhow once I had got the the top from Burnsall)

Pretty similar to the route I usually do when I'm up that neck o' the woods. Love the long drag up to Greenhow Hill, and there are some mighty steep ramps just as you turn off the A59 (which is grim).

I typically do that route on Christmas day every year now. If anyone fancies it this Dec 25th? :-)

Change your route to the 1st right off the A59 and follow the lane through Beamsley,Nesfield, Ilkley and on to Askwith. After the pub in Askwith take the lane up the hill to rejoin the Otley / Blubberhouses road and turn left back to Blubberhouses. Then turn right back past Swinsty reservior and back to Harrogate as you normally would.
I suppose the A59 would be pretty empty on Xmas day though.
If you want some company let me know.

Actually never been down Church Lane - normally head for Glasshouses and up the hill Nep D is talking about to head back to Otley.
