Merlin Cycles don't know the weight of the wheels they build

I have been looking around for some replacement wheels and Merlin seem to be a good choice to buy from. The trouble is, they don't know the weight of the stuff they build :?

I find this very odd, as surely when buying new wheels, after the spec and price, this is the next thing you want to know?

They told me to look up the weight of the rims and hubs I was thinking of buying, but what about the weight of the spokes,I asked, don't know, was the reply I got

Considering the options & variety available it would take quite a long time to work out the wheel weights for all their custom builds

CRC don't list their custom wheel build weights either.

If you know all of the components of your build, weights can be found on www.weightweenies.starbike.com

even when you add up the weight of the individual components, the wheels will still be heavier than you might think.

i added up the weight of my pro2 with xm819 and db spokes and they were about 150g heavier when they arrived.

Do you know the rim, spoke and hub weights? I know what you mean though.

If you're that worried look here.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

  • Weight of various Hope hoops builds (from Lex`s website) eg Hope Pro 2 with various rims,From this at least ,you can see the difference in rim weights.

    Weights in Grams for Wheels:

  • If you want to use DT spokes, the spoke length calculator on their site will give you the weight of a wheelset.

There's probably also an element of not wanting to tell you the weights in case when the wheels arrive they're 1 gram over and you go mad, I think. (or equally, in case they give you a completely honest weight and you end up choosing a competitor's product which has a more optimistic claimed weight)

As the weight is an issue with all bike parts when buying new, surely it would only take a few moments to weigh a wheel once it's built, then just write it down. Then supply a table of options/ weights.

I can see that there are fussy f*!kers around that would quibble over a few extra grams here and there over the advertised weight though.

If you are at the point where you need to know the exact weights of specific builds, you more than likely already know anyway.

There are hundreds of combos that Merlin do though.

I haven`t met any weightweenie mountain bikers but I`m mostly a roadie now. Seems a bit daft if you`re riding a 30lb bike to worry about a few ounces.

Done quite cheaply - amazing what you can get if you look about. Carbon/titanium seatpost £38 and weighs 175g. Stem, £20, 120g. Loads of not so well known brands kicking out high quality lightweight kit.

Can't quite remember but think about 10g or so? Well worth it for £4 in my opinion.

You can get new weight saving drinking devices now - basically they recycle your pee. You put a catheter in before the race, and a lightweight filter returns the water to your hydropak.

I'm down to the diminishing returns stuff now... Like, I only ever chew with the right side of my mouth so I figured I might as well get out the old Park Tools Molar Removal Tool and shed another 6 grams of unneccesary grinder.
