Uploading 'course' data from Garmin Edge 705

I've just been for my 2nd ride with the new Edge. Very impressed, except for 1 thing. I can't upload the HR/ speed etc data from my last ride.

I routed it in BikeHike and saved it as a course on the Edge. No waypoints, so there was no prompting, but that's another topic...

I can see the HR/ speed data on the Edge for the ride, but Garmin Connect/ Training centre don't recognize it. What do I need to do? When I just rode and pressed start, I got the data with no problems (on another ride)

I couldn't find the answer on Frank Kinlan.

Thanks!

Simon

Once you've connected your unit to your pc and opened Training Centre, you click on the "Transfer Data From Garmin" icon and it should import into Training Centre.

Are you getting an error message or something? Possibly a corrupt file?
  • Hi,

There is no error message, it just says 'no new data to upload'. When I look back at old data, the 1st ride I did is there (just starting the timer and riding), but not when I followed the course. It is visible on the edge itself.

I have also just tried doing it manually - when it gives an error message. Does this sound like a file corruption problem?

Would updating the software help? It currently has 2.7. Presumably I should be able to see the HR/ speed data from every ride?

    Thanks

When you followed your course, you did press the "Start/Stop" button when you set off didn't you? This starts the data recording into the Edge memory.

All stored rides should be visible on the unit under:
History > By Day ................... appear as a list of dates / time of day ride started / number of laps in the ride .................. with ride data (Ride Time / Distance etc) appearing in the window below. Selecting any of these stored rides brings up the map of the ride on screen.
Is the ride you did as a Course visible in History? Instead of the time of day and number of laps it will have the name of the course that you followed from your "Courses" menu to the right of the date.

When you connect the Garmin to your pc, you should be able to browse the unit's memory using Windows Explorer (opens as a virtual disk drive). Is there a file with the date of your missing ride in the Garmin>History folder on the drive? You should be able to import the file into BikeHike or BikeRouteToaster and examine the route you took. If you can do this but still can't open with Training Center then it's likely to be a corrupted file.

Not sure what you mean by "doing it manually".

Shouldn't make any difference. If anything I think there have been more file corruption problems with firmware version 2.7 than there were with 2.6 which is what I'm still running.
  • Hi,

I did reinstall new software. This lost the original course data, but another one has now uploaded successfully. Hopefully that is the problem fixed.

Thanks for your help. Now I just need to work out how to upload gpx routes to it!

I shouldn't bother - my experience is that the .tcx files (courses) work much better on the 705 than .gpx files
