No it wasn't a penalty, the keeper came rushing out, twisted his knee ball was crossed in and with an open goal Di Canio caught the ball explaining that the keeper was seriously injured. There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...

In the sixties Rodney Marsh was a leading exponant in the art of clipping his own heels as he went past an opponant, and has admitted he bought many a penalty like that. It went on all the time, but didn't come to public attention because few matches were televised and in any case picture definition wasn't sharp enough to give clear detail on controversial decisions.
This "Golden age" was also the time when players suffered injuries that blighted the rest of their lives because referees ignored crippling tackles where the defender didn't even pretend to go for the ball, and the public and the media gloried the perpretators as being the hard guys in a mans game.
The golden age of football is here now, it was much worse in the past.0
