For flagrant cheating banned or not?, (although the arch cheater Renaldo was never brought to book)
Pictures in today's Indie show - other newspapers as well I'm sure
They do it for unseen (at the time), arms in faces so why not?

Hold on.
Regardless of whether he was diving or not. Celtic were getting there asses whipped and had NO chance of qualifying. Just sounds to me like a bitter SFA chief that "again" a Scot's team as fallen even before the first European Hurdle.
Come on you Jambos!!!!!!!0 -
Why the uproar for Eduardo when others have been doing this and getting away with it for ages?
If the ref spots the dive and doesn't give the penalty is it any less cheating? no, but no-one gets their knickers in a twist about it like this. And the punishment is a yellow card as it stands, so retrospectively give him a yellow card. Why should the punishment be more severe just because he was better at it than joe bloggs who got a yellow for diving last week and didn't fool the ref. It is the same offence.
No ban.
I'm in favour of bans for diving, but establish that a ban will be the punishment, change the rule and fix forwards. Don't retrospectively ban people where you wouldn't have banned them before. Not climber, not sprinter, not rouleur0 -

Well after his performance they certainly had no chance. He cheated, plain and simple, and should be punished. Overall Celtic deserved to be beaten, but their heads went down after that shocking incident, so who knows what could have happened if they got a goal instead. On the whole, scots teams and especially Celtic have a great record against English opposition. Currenty 13 wins for Celtic to 5 for English teams, and that includes the two losses to Arsenal. I think Arsenal are happy that is over and they are through."Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0 -
Cheating is tacitly condoned by Arsene "I've not seen the replay" Wenger, thus it is obviously part of the Arsenal way. The London posters on here defending Eduardo and objecting to retrospective punishment, further illustrates their support for cheats.
The parallels to cycling are obvious - the cheating victor mocks the victim for his sour grapes, with a nudge and a wink insists cheating is all part of the game, and explodes with self-righteous indignation if brought to book.
We need more people like 'gers manager Walter Smith who suspended and fined one of his own players for simulating injury after a non-existent head butt, and more people like Wiggo who don't hide behind weasel words, but rather describe the cheats as they are: wankers.0 -
I can sympathise with forwards who dive. They spend much of the game getting kicked, tugged and elbowed by defenders unseen by the officials so I suppose when they get a chance to buy one they feel they are redressing the balance.
Watch what goes on in the area while players are waiting for a corner.0 -
Yo Joe,
Two wrongs don't make a right. The path you advocate spirals downwards into anarchy, with every player feeling that it's justified to cheat his opponent in order to balance some imaginary ledger.
The virtue of sportsmanlike and gentlemanly conduct is still prized by some, but clearly not by Arsenal Football Club.0 -
If you're caught diving in the opposition's penalty area, how about, in place of a yellow card, the punishment being a penalty taken against your team?0

And let's not put this all on Arsenal, cheating is as common in football as doping is in cycling, swimming and athletics.0 -

Being as i'm a life-long Spurs fan, he should of course die a long lingering death by a thousand paper cuts.
Only kidding. Although he blatantly conned the referee. Retrospective red card?Let's close our eyes and see what happens0 -
im an arsenal fan but wengers statement in the paper today was ridiculous!! he said something along the lines of "i can understand why eduardo went over in teh box, after what happend he was avoiding the keepers knee" who is going to believe that!!!!!Genesis Core 200

Nothing against a particular player, team or country as they are ALL at it.
The answer is blatently obvious. That is why FIFA and/or UEFA will not implement it.
Simply put, the 4th official watches the game he has officiated at after the event.
Any missed cards get retrospectively added. Any wrong cards get recinded.
It won't change the results of a match but may lead to an accumulation, leading to a ban.
It may get players thinking before any cheating at least; maybe.
They appear to do this on an ad-hoc basis. Why not all games?None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.0 -
What about citing as they do in rugby?
I despise divers and have done for years, even when is started in Italia90! But I also hate defender's tugging on shirts, elbowing players and the old shoulder to shoulder in the penalty box when they blatantly try to stop the attacking player from reaching the ball.
Referee's need to be more strict and also a lot more consistent. On Monday nights game at Anfield, Reo-Cocker got booked for his 1st tackle which was a cynical shirt tug then Lucas got a telling off 5 mins later for the same type of tackle, even though this was his 3rd or 4th foul.
Linesman/assistant referree's call them what you like need to start to MTFU as well. Too many of them see incidents but fail to flag or inform the ref. They stare blankly at the ref in some instances like rabbits in headlights and you can see them thinking "WHAT DO I DO???"There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...

I hope that UEFA have the plums to cut both of his feet off, cheating cheater. Such behaviour wouldnt be acceptable in Gods part of North London. Thats why we play in virginal Lilywhite and they play in Satans favourite colour.
Why is it wrong when a foreigner does it but when Stevie Me did it for England (without being touched) he is clever? "Simulation" is an accepted part of the game nowadays, Andy Gray almost praises forwards for going down easily.0 -

Kenny Dalglish's comment was priceless.
"well foreigners just don't have the same sense of right and wrong that we do" wtf
Ranks up there with the "lazy ni66er" comment made by Ron Atkinson.
Anyway, as an Arsenal fan I was very dissapointed by Eduardo's performance but to be fair the last time Eduardo went in on a 50/50 it wasn't pretty so that has to be factored in there somewhere. That's no justification for his actions and I felt he could have stood up and acknowledged it was no foul (like Arshavin did last season). However Boruc did not need to fly in as he did (as Eduardo had knocked it wide anyway) and in most cases it is safer to drop to the ground instead of clashing with your opponent.
Ultimately all of this dishonesty could be prevented but UEFA/FA etc. are not interested in trying to stop shirt pulling, acting, offsides or even dubious goals by means of a replay. Given the money involved you really can't stop the cheating unless you make it near impossible for players to get away with it. But they're not bothered so why should the players be ? Very sad0 -
In the golden years of football, players only fell to the ground if they were actually physically tripped-up and could not retain their balance.
However, over the years, there have been increasing numbers of footballers who's acting ability usually outweighs any footballing prowess they may posess. As a result, they have been going down faster than a prostitute at an Italian Political Party Conference for far too long.
Surely there is more than enough money (and often enough at stake) in 1st Division football for there to be a video referee?Cycling weakly0 -
3 match ban in Europe.

It was a game-changing moment, simple as.
All games have them, indeed all sports have them, an action taking place that completely changes the dynamic, psychological/physical of what's happening on the field or on the road or court, and that is precisely what Eduardo achieved.
Celtic collapsed after that, and whatever perspective one might have on the overall pattern of the game with regard to Arsenals superior possession/attacking quality there's no doubt that they had not managed to score other than by the cheating action of one of their players.Spesh Works Roubaix '10

"But for me, sport is more than just winning trophies. Winning cannot be everything.
"What is important for me is to play in a fair way and in a way that people will enjoy. A trophy is what you can show, but the way you play, the way you behave, these are also important. To win trophies is important, but that is not the only thing in sport. Moral integrity is important. For me sport is more than just winning trophies."
Quote from Mr Wenger, March 2008 after feeling hard done by Chelsea, mmmmmm.
Nevermind we now get to play the king cheats, Rapid Vienna!!! Mon the Hoops!0 -
Pot and kettle Celtic had one of the worst divers in Scottish football and yes his diving won them games Shunsuke Nakamura there wasnt a lot of moaning from their corner then
imho it spoils the game and i hope a decision can be made that will put players off doing itLife is not a spectator sport0 -
Let's face it he does look a greasy dirty little cheat, much like Rico?0
-
Cheating's cheating. The sooner the footballing authorities start handing out bans for players, and eventually clubs of players, for cheating the better.

I watched the game and thought at the time....no contact there.
but i didn't think he was simulating either. Boruc came in...looked like he was getting the ball and I thought Eduardo just tried to avoid a collision.
So....in that situation.....when the ref points to the spot...name one striker that would say...nah ref...no contact...yeah right...they take the penalty....
sure it could be said it was a game turning moment, but were celtic really ever going to score 3 goals against arsenal at home? a tall order for any team.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Who cares, it's just another Scottish football team to laugh at for me, yeah you got beaten by a dubious penalty but who cares, they were never going to win anyway.0
-
cee I can name one - Robbie 'God" Fowler. Did it against Arsenal a few years back. Told ref Seaman didn't touch him but ref insisted on giving the penalty...work that one out!?!?!
He struck penno at easy reach ball came back and I think it was Jason 'Trigger" Mcateer who put in rebound.
He received an award for that from FIFA.
Why couldn't have Eduardo done that? There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...
