I'm off to Crossgates near Llandrindod Wells the weekend after next to see family and coming from Kent I've not ridden there before. So I was hoping someone may be able to recommend a good route or two with plenty of climbing in the area?
Cheers for any pointers in advance :D

Look at the route for the Trans Cambrian sportive, it starts nearby in Rhayader.

    That's great, cheers George :D
That looks like quite some route, nice... did you do it?

Done in twice, and will do it again in 3 weeks time. It's a very underrated event - lovely countryside with challenging but not ridiculous climbs.

No shortage of hills and quiet roads in this area. You really are spoilt for choice! How much time do you have?

Elan Valley, on the Trans-Cambrian, is gorgeous. Sustrans' Route 81 runs through here. The start of the Trans-Cambrian, going over the hills to Llanidloes via Pant-y-Dwr is also good fun.

The B roads south of Builth Wells over Epynt towards Brecon would be challenging. Abergwesyn pass to the West is well known and features on the Devil Ride (info on Epic Cycles' website).

There are more great roads over towards Knighton or the winding A483 towards Newtown - potential loop rides abound here too.

Smashing thanks Simon. I'm there for 4 days so reckon I will go out a couple of times and all of the help chaps has been spot on. I will check the routes and I look forward to the riding :D

Many thanks Simon and George, I took in some of the riding you suggested and enjoyed some b*stard hard climbing and all good fun, if a little wet

Glad you had a good time.

It's Wales, so it rains and yes there is no shortage of the kind of hills you describe ;)
