German media are saying an athlete in the 100m men's final has tested positive for something:

Bolt ran today in the 200m, so I doubt it's him.

There's a runner I know and he was telling me yesterday that every time Bolt beats the world record, his sponsors (TDK) give him a million dollars! So we've probably not seen him go flat-out yet because he wants to keep making millions by beating his record by small margins each time. :D
    .
It was the same with some Russian guy in the pole vault, he kept breaking the record by tiny amounts. It`s a bit easier to do in the pole vault as they decide how high they want to go.

That was Sergey Bubka I believe, according to wikipedia he racked up 35 world records

Nice work if you can get it, shame I'm not talented enough.

Makes you wonder though, if you had a race with him, what distance would you have to do to beat him?

Years ago when I used to race fixed wheel on a grass track for my school sports day I used to do some early morning training when there were athletes training on the same ground. Sometimes I would help them with a bit of sprint training. From a standing start I couldn't catch them within about 200 meters. I think I could catch them in 400....no longer really a sprint though! With a rolling start it was closer, and with a flying start they couldn't catch me. Bear in mind I wasn't a top class athlete but neither were they.

The corners on an unbanked grass track are really difficult on a bike especially with early morning dew!!! If Hoy were to go up against Bolt (much more sense than going up against Lewis Hamilton) what track would be the most interesting if it had to be either an athletics track or velodrome? Do you think Hoy could stop in the space available to a sprinter or would he make the unbanked corner at speed?

You could have Chris Hoy on the velodrome, and Usain Bolt running round the blue-floor area next to him, where it's flat, obviously with some kind of staggered distance.

Then again, the 100m is done on the straight bit of the track, so a long straight flat road would be better.

That`s the chap, Ukranian, in fact. That`s what you call maximising your earnings. I think it would be rather difficult to do something similar in the 100m.

Jamie Staff would annihilate Bolt over 200m, over 100m it would be a very close call.

Usain Bolt's WR 200m time set in Beijing is 19.30. During the Team Sprint final in Beijing, Jamie Staff set a World's Best time over a single (250m) lap of the velodrome from a standing start of 17.136.
  • What track would you run the 200M on? Jamie Staff on an unbanked athletics track would be interesting....as would Bolt on the banking of a velodrome! In his socks!

  • Looks like Chris did the first 250m in under 18 seconds on his way to the 1k record so I would say over 200m he would come out well in front.

My back of an envelope calculations assuming linear acceleration give times of
    100m - 11.4 seconds
    150m - 13.9 seconds

Looks like the bike is quicker for distances somewhere around 150m -200m upwards

ahh.. but what you are forgetting guys is that the track bikes are geared (fixed) for a much higher ultimate top speed than Bolt could run... so i reckon give the bike a much smaller inch gear (just enough to get em over 30mph)and the cyclist would be accerating much much faster over the first 100ms !

You beat me to it, all they would have to do to beat him over 100m is use lower gear, they already do this in training on warm ups, probaby on 82" gear.
Try the veloriders website and you would probably get some times from guys there.

    100m - 9:58

Multiplied by 2 = pretty close to his 19:19.

That's crazy. It shows he can hold the 100m pace for twice as long as he needs to.

His 2nd 100m tonight will be around 9.3sec.

the second 100 of a 200 is a rolling start, so he's pacing himself slightly slower than a flat out 100...

His maximum speed this week: 27.6mph

Some geek has worked it out and it got a mention on the BBC just now.
  • I'd only just regained the power of speech after the 100m when I watched the 200m. He is at a completely different level. These races are all too often photo-finishes. He is streets ahead. I like his relaxed slightly cocky but not the american-brash-cocky that gets on everyone's t1ts
