Brought a tear to my eye - great to see progress - congrats Usain - Tyson's leg-speed was something else aswell.

Looks like the first race he's run where he didn't back off with 30% of the race still to go!
  • Tyson Gay was doing a mighty fine Ben Johnson impersonation

  • Only just seen the race. My jaw is bruised from hitting the floor.

As Andy Parsons said on Mock the Week after the Olympics the only thing missing is Usain pulling out his mobile phone to take a picture as the finish line approaches and imploring the rest to catch up so he can get them all in the shot! He seems to do it with such ease - I think his relaxed approach is key.

As a short aside one of my personal memories was of watching the 1992 Olypics. My baby daughter was in my arms as I settled down to watch Lindford Christie in the 100m (my event at school). Daughter was just dozing off when Christie flew through the finish in first and I was on my feet shouting - shooshing - shouting - shooshing  Took me ages to get daughter settled down after that - took me even longer

Is Usain the greatest ever? Well, I'm sure Daley Thompson might say second...

  • 4th race in 2 days and all and sundry said the track was "too soft". What can he do in perfect conditions?

Even more astonishing when you realize that the figure is average speed - his maximum must be higher than that! When he came to Manchester recently, one of the news reports said he was getting to 28mph.

I've not tried it, but accelerating from zero on a bike and averaging that sort of speed over 100m must be very hard.

So I guess he doesn't have to worry about locking his bike up, as long as he stays within a few meters of it.

I'm not sure that there's a machine on earth that can accelerate like a human, even one not as fast as Bolt, so I'd reckon we'd all be screwed in a race on our bikes over 20 yards or so.

Makes you wonder though, if you had a race with him, what distance would you have to do to beat him?

I reckon I could have him over 100 miles.

You wouldn't want to be a 100m/200m sprinter at the moment when he's around - you'll have absolutely no chance of winning. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the 100m world record close to 9 seconds at some stage.

    How does he do it?

There's a runner I know and he was telling me yesterday that every time Bolt beats the world record, his sponsors (TDK) give him a million dollars! So we've probably not seen him go flat-out yet because he wants to keep making millions by beating his record by small margins each time. :D

As for the theoretical cyclist v runner question - depends on the conditions/cyclist really. Chris Hoy in a velodrome might get him over 200m, although Bolt holds the world record in that too, which I think isn't far off his 100m pace x2...

He'd probably start to die after that, because that's the sort of distances he trains for - kind of like how Cav can only really handle certain distances before he blows.
