I've just had a quick read through of The Cyclists Training Bible and most of it makes a certain amount of sense, but I can't get an understanding of what he means by breakthrough sessions, even after going through the index and reading all the references to them. Anyone help?

Is it a higher intensity session designed to raise your sustianable power?

My interpretation of this term is a hard training session that leaves you trashed for a couple of days. As you get fitter through the season, these "breakthrough sessions" have to become increasinly harder / longer.

That's interesting because the impression I got from the book is that such training sessions are not what you should be doing. Go hard by all means but not to the extent that you're shot for days after.

    Isn't that just a 2x20 interval session....?

    From the horses' mouth:

"You can also include any form of Breakthrough (BT) work out in the same way. These are sessions that focus specifically on ‘A’ race limiters and because they are challenging require at least 36 hours for full recovery. If you can do these in the afternoon or early evening they may produce better results, but care needs to be taken in balancing the day’s stress by placing a lighter work out before it and, possibly, after if for recovery."
