I haven't had problems with my 9speed for years but I remember hating the progression up from 8speed, used to break chains, hated shifting... I can't see how 10 with it's narrow tollerances would stand up against a cassette chock full of mud. Still, I haven't ridden XX so who knows... We'll all be begruding converts in a few years time when it's OEM everywhere
Actually, will it solve chain crossing? Would you be able to use all of the rear cassette off of the front two rings?0 -

Seriously? 20 people?
Anyway, taking pneumatic tyres and all the other inventions that came along before any of us on this forum were born, I'd say the standout improvements are:
1. V Brakes, I remember the first incarnation was by a bloke working in his shed in Liverpool (I think), they were featured in an issue of MBUK and not long after Shimano came along and gave it the polish treatment.
2. STI gears on road bikes (I am not a fan of downtube shifters, but I also don't have a beard). STI gears on MTBs too, but they were fitted to most (yes I'm aware of the early clunkers that didn't have them) MTBs that any of us have ever seen so less of an 'invention' if you see what I mean.
3. Suspension that works.
4. Less weight without sacrificing too much strength.
But for me it was V brakes, they really did transform braking.0 -
Clip less pedals way better than toe clips and strap.0
